Boy Scouts of America Troop 1

Campouts/Trips, Summer Camp, and Fund-Raising

Campouts/Trips: We schedule campouts on a monthly basis (see our calendar) We leave and return to the Church on a regular basis. The meeting on the Monday before a campout is important to gather all of the neededinformation before the next campout. Occasionally we use a church van for transporting scouts, but parental transportation is often preferred. The Troop owns a trailer for hauling Scout/Leader camping equipment and a trailer for the Troop's 7 canoes. Scouts are responsible for the cost of food, usually on a patrol basis. If a scout does not cancel 24 hours in advance or does not show up for a campout, the Scout is still responsible for his share of all fees (you will appreciate this when it is your turn to buy food or make reservations). Scouts take turns purchasing food for campouts to learn about shopping and money management. (A good weekend campout should cost no more than $5 per scout for food.) At least 3 registered adult leaders are required on all outing, but parents are welcome and encouraged to come on all Troop 1 trips. Usually 5 to 8 parents, including mothers, go on the campouts.

Summer Camp: Each year, Troop 1 goes to either Camp Hohn or Camp Thunderbird for an entire week of fun. The boys are given the experience of learning in the great outdoors and working on merit badges. There is everything from getting up to honor the flag to listening to stories and skits around the fire at night. Activities vary depending upon the camp to which they are going that year. Swimming in the lake is a real treat, but watch out for the fish (they like to find out what your taste like - mostly curious, nothing dangerous). All boys are given a swimming test before being allowed into the lake and never allowed to go alone. They get to shoot guns but only under the direction of a certified range officer. Fishing is also permitted and the buddy system is recommended.

Fund-Raising: The Troop has several fund-raising activities that include a pancake breakfast, bar-b-que, chili supper, in addition to the annual Boy Scouts of America popcorn sales. There are other fund-raisers from time to time on an as needed basis. The fund-raisers are held to help the Scouts earn money for their Scout accounts, used for campout expenses and Summer camp. Fund-raisers also help the Troop purchase new equipment.
