How to get there?

Take the Hulu Langat Road from Batu 9 Police Station, on the way into Pangsoon there are 2 small hamlets namely Bt14 and Bt18 { translated "Bt" the local short form for milestone}. After the 2nd one at Bt 18, which is a junction township, take the right turning into a road going towards Semenyih or Kampong Sungei Lui.

The road follow the Lui River where Gabai empties into. A rusty road with beautiful Malay villages and houses.

My Waterfall collection # 6/84

Watch for the sign on your left. The turn-off is small and quite sudden. Look out for the sign on your left after seeing a milestone that marks 39, a huge signboard should prompt you the way to the falls. Once on this little narrow road, you will be passing durian orchards. Rather straight of 3 kilometers and ending with a small car park. The village committee collects a fair size parking fees.

The Place

There is now an improvised signboard showing where the trail head to the waterfall is. Otherwise, you need not expect other sign at the junction of this very narrow orchard road.  In March Durian flowers scattered all along this road, along the way, there were no houses. Then a surprising feature on this road. There was this monstrous Mansion, 85% complete but abandoned. What an unearthly looking castle in this hidden paradise.

The waterfall car park was kept absolutely clean as compared to that dreaded Sendat in Ulu Yam. The young attendant lost no time in collecting parking fee.  If you are here on weekdays, there are car parking lots available. On weekends - it will be tricky to find a space on this narrow and confined road. If the village committee is collecting fees, why don't they keep the picnic area on top of the waterfall tidy! Yak! is the expression for me.

Gabai is a "real" waterfall with water gushing down steep cascades. This is the welcoming cascade of 30 meters in height, preceded by a similar one immediately on top. Overall the whole waterfall is a tall fall - over 50 meters high. In fact if you are observant enough, on the road in, you could swear that the white streak seen against the mountain slope is part of the waterfall.  This imperfect  picture [left] almost flattened a perfectly near vertical cascade.

But this last gush is almost near vertical. You will not like the force created by the falling water too!

The nice part of Gabai is the hike up the hills. There are 300 over steps up. Here, you will find 2 small cascades with a pool at the end of each. Of course the view from the top, it is worth the effort and at last on top of the waterfall. For some of you, shocked by the height of this waterfall, may do not wish to torture yourself with steps. It is really too crowded up there. Only one consolation, if you like the nice small pools.

My recommendations?

While you may see lots of people immersing themselves in the little river down stream after the waterfall, I can tell you the bulk of the crowd is on top of the waterfall. Reason being, water downstream could be contaminated through heavy usage upstream, playing area is confined to that in the water. The banks of the river look wild and edges full of weeds.

Up on top, occasional flash flood has kept the rocky floor clean and polished. Most important, there are much more places for picnic and seating together as a group. Whichever you choose, getting decent place or climbing the steps, you know better.
