The place?
From
that junction, the track will quickly lead to an open area! It is a
compound where villagers barter their produce with fruit collectors.
This is also the car park, from here the track narrows to cross over a bridge. A
couple of "snake bends", the trail winds towards an Orang Asli settlement.
This is a fair size village with about 15 houses standing on a
hillock nestled between 2 hills. On left side, the mountain road where
people access the settlement, the right, a higher mountain where the
waterfalls is located. There is a shallow valley that existed
between this mountain and the settlement.
If you are
adventurous enough, you could venture out on your own. Just
follow one of the numerous trails which I believe will lead to the
waterfall. In this wilderness and since the act of going into the
settlement is some form of trespassing, it is best to pay a nominal
fees for a guide service and get your adventure.
Down the valley
and up the hill.
Once we were up some height, we could recognize
evidences that the path was once a broad track for logging trucks. It
was now badly overgrown.
At that
moment when I was there , it was reduced to a very narrow single trail. At one point , we were
crawling through fallen branches of a trees. It was a short trek of
less than an hour. That scene in the forest and at the trail only reminded me
how much these locals who lived
with jungle respect their surrounding. They need not clear
their way, as the way ahead is of no hindrance to their advance. They
need not rush like city folks. Ahead I could see that we were moving nearer to a
small ravine and river. The track made a turn and started going uphill.
Judging from the signs showing usage of the
trail, locals do not
follow the climb but rather use the river. So we departed the
so-called "track".
Instead of moving up, we headed down into a ravine and to
the river. The river was quickly reached with a few minutes. From
there on, it was river trekking over the rocks.
It was
not pleasant as the trek went over boulders and up the flowing stream.
There was a final turn and we were at the base of the waterfall.
It was a very steep cascade.
A few
meters up from the base, there was a spot where we could stand and
rested. We were looking out of a clearing, seeing a deep valley
below. Then the Main Road across the valley was clearly visible! All those trekking
we had and only a guide fees of RM20. Another quick thinking local guy who tacked along without our
request also received a tip from us for being such comforting
companions.
A small
price for one weekend of adventure
My recommendation?
Years later and after
reading what I have posted up, I can still feel that we are very
lucky indeed. A short distance away from our home, friendly locals
and a day that we can do some activities that is unusual.
More so that outdoor is
what I love and to be with nature is spiritual. With these closing
remarks, I would say that this destination is not one for family
picnic. Not one that you can go swimming. But one where you could go
for a guided tour like early explorer. Its good and not so tough.
Try it.
