How to get there ?

To reach this waterfall, you must first get on to the winding road from Kuala Kubu Baharu to The Gap. Now there is a nice land mark, the Pertak Dam! Once passing the area of the Dam, the road start its journey amidst forest. The winding stretch starts. Very soon, about a kilometers and half away from the dam, the road makes a very sharp angular turn. At this bend is an antique looking steel bridge.  After crossing the steel bridge, just another 100 meters up, there is an opening on your right and an archway. A steel bar now prevent all kind of vehicles from entering the area. First part of the tracks about 1-kilometer long leads to an open area. For a long time, this spot had served as a parking area and campsite. Now there is a signboard to inform hikers that camping is prohibited. This stretch of river from the road in to the park area had taken many lives. The open area looks tame, sudden flash flood submerges most dry ground ! From the open area, a suspension bridge will take visitors across the river. Here, follow the trail -you will reach the waterfalls after 5 zig-zags river crossings.

The place ?

Selangor state offers countless water based picnic spots for people to spend their weekends. Cool river water surrounded by jungle greenery. The largest and very popular picnic area was the 3 kilometers stretch of the Pertak River that runs almost parallel to the road leading to Fraser's Hill. Here you and your family can enjoy the cool, clear water. The tree on the riverbanks provide additional shades complete the ambience for your day’s outing.

Most parts of these beautiful picnic spots was available until the end of the century. Since the Dam was commissioned, the traditional picnic spots reduced, but not all is lost. Picnickers opened up what was previously poor accessible spots upstream. For some who have driven a long way here, they would prefer less crowded areas and an opportunity to be with nature at its pristine stage. Here, there are some fairly large rapids made by the fast flowing waters. Then, the gang ho adventurers  would even avoid those well trodden paths to seek that hidden waterfall. Until now, not many people are aware that the upstream areas of the Chiling tributary offer more! The Chiling Waterfalls- two of them, one of the most beautiful sights in the country. The trekking in itself - exhilarating.

This legendary waterfall that is rumored to be very beautiful. It is a well kept secret - the area needs protection. Then it surroundings  should not be developed. But reaching the waterfall itself and playing around it, is treacherous. No safety measures are installed for those not familiar with outdoor life! Also remember that having large crowd is not an assurance but rather false sense of security.

After the suspension bridge, visitors must follow a 2 kilometers trail upstream alongside the riverbank to reach the first river crossing. Leaving the track now, there are clear-cut trails to guide visitors through the crossings of the river several times.  A couple of crossings involve weaving in between boulders. Current is swift as the river is going through rapids. Water level here varies from 0.5 - 1 meter deep. This river trek is about a distance of 1 kilometer and takes about 30 minutes. At the end of this exciting trek, a truly magnificent sight awaits you. There in front of you, is this monstrous fall, a great sight to behold. The force from the vertical fall of the water has over the years, carved great cervices on the rocks. Beware of the wet rocky walls by the fall. The fall of water is so forceful that it's misty sprays cover the whole vicinity, giving it a misty ethereal atmosphere. The waterfall is about 50 meters tall. What is frightening, is the appearance of the waterfall - intimidating yet exciting. A giant water sprout with plenty of "smoke". At the base rocks break up the falling wall of water before it enters into a 50 meters wide pool of varying depths. If you still have the energy and curious enough, climb up the steep bank to the top of the fall, to get a different view of the fall.

From this point, another trail leads to the 2nd Waterfall. A larger swimming pool and another equally breath taking waterfall awaits you and your group. Do bring your camera along to record your memorable trip to this remote fall!. Finally up to the 3rd Waterfall. This place is better suited as picnic than that at the 1st Waterfall.

My recommendation ?

I think seeing the pictures themselves would have build up that enthusiasm in you and I need not say much. This place only one hour and 15 minutes from Kuala Lumpur is worth your efforts. It is very safe especially when you know what you are doing and are taking all necessary precautions. By now 2008, this place is filled with weekenders. Your group won't be alone in the jungle.

I am not crazy about trekking anymore, but  Boo Seng has graciously supplied me more pictures as updates.
