How to get there
The road
to Kota Tinggi Town from the North-South Expressway is very good. Mono-carriage
but absolutely straight. But, remember those roads in Johore, the
special characteristics of long
undulations. From the town of Kulai, turn into Highway 94. I vaguely
remember, must be around 48 kilometers journey to Kota Tinggi Town.
Upon arrival in this fairly large Kota Tinggi
town, be clear that you are heading to the waterfall. Do not continue on the trunk
road to the East Coast.
Instead
look for a road branching north to reach the waterfall.
From the
traces left behind, this area
was formerly famous for its iron mines. I have not read any anywhere
to this point. But I noticed that there was a
small settlement of Lombong around that area.
The place
The Kota Tinggi park was
made famous by the river and the waterfall. It is the focal point of
the day's outing. This is one waterfall that is southernmost and near
to urban Singapore. Over the years and growing demands, the Park area
was upgraded continuously. To us northerners, we could hardly
recognize the place as a forest park. It is as crowded and developed
as any theme park that we see in urban Kuala Lumpur.
The area of the park
itself is relatively small by our standard. It has a gigantic car
park, almost half the area of the park. From the car park to the main
waterfall area, is a beeline line along the bank of the river. This
walking distance is approximately a kilometer.
All the way paved. Going
in, on
the left, the food outlets and stalls. Then on the right, the river itself.
There are railings along the banks and the river itself is kept free of
rubbish. Picnickers would be on a lookout for any empty spaces in the
river. Places where the water is flowing, plant them selves there
and enjoy great outdoor nature in that spot. The depth of water in the stream is
hardly more than half meter in any spot.
I think that the best part of
the trip, is to witness an authentic waterfall. One created made by nature. Of
course, this river that flows down from the low hills of Muntahak [634m
high] could not be bringing along a large volume of water. Likewise the
gush of water through the
waterfall was not dramatic at the time this picture was taken.
I would recommend!
This is
a good place to bring your children out for the weekends. More
appropriate for most urban family who could not find time for more
exotic destination. If you have any plans of having picnic, just have something
very simple munches. Problem! You could not find suitable place to enjoy
the eating together. Remember it is a
day off and justifying the long journey here. Of course within this
small confine and the large crowd, one cannot expect a very conducive
ambience. I only wish that I could say something more cheerful.
