Abseiling is a good activity for basic rope training and here in WA we have a good system whereby the Venturer can complete three levels of competency in abseiling , ranging from basic knots and descents to rescue work and the like.
Abseiling in the Perth Metropolitan area is usually confined to two or three venues being old disued quarries. This is part of the beauty of being a Venturer , we often share the quarry with
commercial groups who are paying around $50+
for a days abseiling where they may get 10 straight descents if their lucky . Venturers on the other hand pay around $15 for a day and are actually trained in roping techniques.  If this kind of stuff interests you read on.

Requirements for Basic Abseiler
Certificate

1. Has undergone an Abseiling  lecture and understands the safety precautions applicable

2. Demonstrate knowledge of the standard climbing communication terms and procedures

3. Tie without error and demonstrate practical applications of the following knots

  • Bowline
  • Clove Hitch
  • Alpine Butterfly
  • Round turn and two half hitches
  • Prusik
  • Tape Knot
  • Double Fishermans
  • Figure eight on the bight
  • Figure eight feedback

4. Demonstrate how to set up a rope

5. Demonstrate the use of two types of descenders

6. Establish a safe top belay and demonstrate how to belay competently

7. Show a general knowledge in ways which damage can occur to synthetic rope in
storage , in transport , in use , in abuse

8. Show a general knowledge on how to recognise damage and wear and care for
personal gear

9. Demonstrate how to coil rope

10. Show basic knowledge of first aid including treatment of concussion , bleeding ,
fractures , sprains , shock and exposure

11. Demonstrate how to lock off

12. Abseil in at least two different localities

13 Minimum number of descents 10 on a sheer face , 10 on an overhang
