Hi, Bob! We're back from Musket Cove, but still wannabe on Fiji time! It was just as good as you said it would be. Hot, humid, lots of R and R for us. We met some cruising/charter folks that siad they remembered you/knew you. A couple with 2 boys, on a bo
named Galliente from Bay of Islands pulled in for a day or two, and a Musket Cove charter boat called Hobo, owned by Peter and Pat.
The hospitality at the resort was incredible, and we looked for Suntrekka carved in the beams, but didn't find it. Also, met an old cruising guy on the old ketch, Annabeth who thought he knew you.
Small world. Big when you are sailing around it! Have many more safe journeys, and know we all miss you and love you. Carmy and Terry

Saturday 21 November 1998. This is the meat of a letter that I received from Bob written 16 November 1998. Some parts of the letter have been edited out. :-)
The trip down through the Tonga Islands was fun. Kind of busy for me, single handed, in company with 3 boats with couples aboard. I have to get up earlier, stay up later and hustle in between to keep up boat Maint., laundry, cooking, cleaning, & sight
eeing going much less sailing the boat. We left Atata Island on 10-24, having waited for the right interval in the regular procession of high & low pressure systems that start over Aust. & come east over NZ. The trick is to catch the backside of a high
miss the lows, but all the planning is a crap shoot as there is little you can count on in terms of consistency & timing. We stayed at South Minerva Reef (about 250 NM. SW. of Tonga) for five days. Katrilli, Kaparongi, Ashante, & Sea Warrior had taken
ff 2 weeks earlier and they were still flogging around in calms & gales while we stayed at the Reef. Only Blue (James & Faye0 & De La Mer (Scotty & Celia) were there as well, so we got together each evening for happy hour & to go over the weather faxes t
at OB was getting. Did some snorkeling & swimming as the water in the lagoon was crystal clear. Weird being @ anchor in relative calm while the ocean around thunders on the reef all around you. And no land in sight! We left on 1031 and promptly hit ca
ms so I motored for 20 hours straight, then parked the boat under a clear blue sky on glassy calm water, watched the sun go down, ate a hot meal, put up the strobe light and went to bed. I'd left up a small Staysl, sheeted in hard in the middle to steady
the boat some and if the wind comes up the boat will track dead down wind. Expecting Northerly wind which did come that night, the boat sailed 20 miles on course as I slept. OB & DLM were about 50 miles ahead by now, but we kept that distance the rest o
the trip as the wind steadily increased. In high & low pressure systems the winds go anti clock wise and clock wise, so the wind direction changed daily and some times several times in a day. Busy work for me keeping the boat on course. Left unattende
, the boat will follow the wind changes & not the course. I sleep with a flashlight in one hand and small compass near by to check for wind shifts every hour or so. Had several days near the end of high winds and rain, so out came the foullies. I spent
a lot of time in the cabin trying to stay warm between sail changes and course corrections. Was all I could do to get 3 hours sleep in 24, the last 3 days. Saturday the 7th dawned the first clear sky for days - so I took a 2 hour nap at sunrise. The wi
d changed gradually while I napped and I woke heading due West, sailing merrily the wrong way! No sooner than I got the wind vane adjusted and sails trimmed the wind died all together so tried to start the motor to no avail. Bu now, this doesn't phase m
in the least, so after an hour or so of wrenching, new fuel filters, a little diesel fuel swallowed and all, my homage to the Perkins, I motored into Opua, Bay of Islands which was 30 NM's away. NZ is beautiful, as you know, and the people here, startin
with the customs & immigration officials have all been cheerful, helpful, and just plain nice. I rented a mooring buoy near Opua for 2 weeks. To do laundry, shop, rest, and sort out some issues with the anchor. Last week I went over to Pihia in the din
y & took the ferry from there to Russell. They are both small towns (under 3K pop) that cater to tourists. So was fun to walk around & see the museums & sights. This week I'll take a bus down to Whangarei to check the mail and price the storage faciliti
s. I'd been told it's cheaper to store the boat here, so we'll see. Look forward to seeing Katrilli and the rest of the gang that has collected there. The last 2 days it's been blowing gale force outside the bay & near that inside, so I've just been do
ng laundry, catching up on letters, reading & generally goofing off. There are hot showers and Laundry machines off the pier where I'm moored & a little store near the post office (next door to the shower) has fresh fruit and veggies.
