Kal-Haven Trail: The Past

KAL-HAVEN TRAIL

Move to End

The late 1830's saw the development of the railroads which had a major impact on adjacent communities from the 1870's through the early 1900's. By the late 1930's passenger traffic went by way of automobile. Freight traffic followed suit and by the early 1970's the railroad between South Haven and Kalamazoo was a memory.

THE PAST
Mentha StoreThis is what the Mentha Store looked like before it was razed. It was a true landmark along the trail. It will be missed by many.
Mentha was formerly the location of a major mint farm owned by Albert M. Todd of the A.M. Todd Company in Kalamazoo.
A look down the Mentha street. This is a bit reminiscent of Mentha in the "good old days".
Westward from Lake 11 before the resurfacing.A view westward from Lake 11 (between Berlamont and Grand Junction) after the old rail bed was cleared.
The surface is now smoother and nature has provided many wildflowers to beautify this remote section.
