Whale Peak, no, Fish Creek, no, Borrego Mountain

Going In Hope it doesn't fall! No, we don't cancel campouts because of the weather! In case you were wondering what we did March 27-29, 1998: We had originally planned to climb Whale Peak as our second backpack of the year. However, the weather forecast was for heavy snow down to 2,500 feet and since the peak is 5,349 feet, we decided to stay out of the mountains.

Friday night we drove in to Fish Creek and set up camp. The sky was mostly clear. The wind started up in the morning and after breakfast we discussed our options. Black clouds loomed to the north and northwest, although it was clear overhead. The scouts wanted to proceed as planned but we were concerned that heavy rains might make the road out impassible. About then we felt windblown rain and decided to head back to the highway.

We parked at Highway 78 and Buttes Pass Road and hiked in to the top of the slot, then up West Butte of Borrego Mountain. On top the view was still impressive although clouds blocked most views to the west. We dropped back down, then west down a ravine which had several dry falls we had to climb down, two with deep water tanks in the rocks below. Finally we hit a 20-foot drop which we avoided by climbing up the wall and then down into another canyon. The return to the cars was by way of The Slot.

All together we hiked about ten miles. The Scouts attitude was great despite the strong wind and occasional light sprinkle. Several said it was their best camping trip yet.

Because of the high winds and the threat of more severe weather we decided to drive home Saturday afternoon. We returned to San Marcos just before 5:00. Extremely heavy weather hit all of Southern California about four hours later!

Even though we didn't actually backpack, we did get good exercise in hiking quite some distance over rough terrain, including several miles without any path, and good experience in dealing with the weather. Scouts were encouraged to exercising to get in shape for the Cuyamaca Camelback in May. -Bill Jeffrey

Camporee

These boys went to camporee: Andy(acting-SPL), Byron (acting ASPL), James, Cory, Jared, Justin, Jason, Kevin C, Ryan, Eric, Moses, Corbin , Ashley, Jeff, Daniel. Boys were split into two patrols with Andy as PL of one patrol and Byron as PL of other patrols. Both patrols received 130+ points out of a possible 150 in various events. Each patrol was awarded a ribbon for their patrol flags. Camporee was held at the rodeo grounds on Camp Pendleton. Nearly 600 boys from both Santa Margarita and Kit Carson districts participated. This camporee was put on by Santa Margarita District. Weather was great.

Also at Camporee, Byron and Assistant Scoutmaster Richard McGee were called out for Order of the Arrow. Congratulations! -Debbie Schenemann

Fund raising

Fund Raising Dudley's bread fundraiser will begin April 30th and end on May 14th. This is the last fundraiser before summer camp fees are due. (Last payment for summer camp is May 22nd before the price goes up.) The monies earned by each boy for these fund raisers will be applied to his summer camp fees or fees for Sierra Treks.

Scout Fair tickets are due back to Debbie Sheunemann and Cindy Cormier by Court of Honor which is April 30. To get more tickets call her. Tickets are $4 each. For each ticket sold, scout will recieve $1 in Scout Bucks to be used towards summer camp fees or to spend in Scout Shop.

Summer Camp

Summer Camp

By now you should already have signed up for summer camp and made your first two payments for a total of $134. Remember, there are two camps to choose from this year -

Mataguay Scout Reservation in Warner Springs is June 28th - July 4th. All new scouts should attend Mataguay, and we know many others look forward to Mataguay every year. The leaders for summer camp at Mataguay will be: Debbie Scheunemann, Dan Lapio, Tom Morison (1st half of week), John Scheunemann (Thursday night thru Saturday).

Fiesta Island offers more of the water oriented merit badges, so if you are interested in that, then Fiesta Island is for you. The dates for Fiesta Island are July 5-July l1. Contact Debbie Balfour to sign up for Fiesta Island.

The cost for either camp is $200 for the week. If you participated in Friends of Scouting this year and have received your Community Appreciation card, you will be given a $15 discount off your last payment. Your final payment is due May 22th and is $66, or $51 with the Community Appreciation card. After that date, the amount due will be $215.

Scout Benediction (How we close our meetings)

This prayer has hand movements (which not everyone knows) that have real meaning.
May the Great Master[Raise Scout sign up in the air towards the heavens]
Of all Scouts[Bring hand down and swing from right to left in front of you]
Be with us[Bring hand to your chest]
Till we meet again[Bow head in prayer]

Cobra Patrol

The Cobra Patrol has been very busy in the last few months. Most scouts earned the following merit badges: Aviation, Climbing, Skiing, Communications, Collections, and Computers. They are all signed up to do the Reptile merit badge campout at the Natural History Museum and all are going to summer camp, either Mataguay or YAC.

Two members, Chris B and Stephen P, earned their Brotherhood in Order of the Arrow. Out of seven members, four have Life, two have Star, and our newest member is a Scout.

And now Part 3 of our continuing series...

Hello. Our Shark Patrol has been talking about Spam and Monty Python. Spam is good! We like Spam. Except of course for the cold green cheese under the door mat who only eats imitation Spam.

Sleep! Hodsman was asleep when his car apparently drove off of the bridge and into the sewage processing plant, authorities said. Unbeknownst to him, the sewage plant has just installed a new filter system. He got sucked against the filter and the water pushed him through the filter. He came out the other side in small...

...but it was this smallness that contributed to his headache. The Spam he had ingested. While he became small, the Spam remained the same. It filled his head. He no longer contained the Spam, he was the Spam. His consciousness throbbed with profound meaning. But we don't care, do we now? Of course not! Of course not because we are the Spam!
[Insert evil laugh here]

And now, for something completely different...
