[Court of Honor] [A Scout is Clean] [Memorial Day - Duty to Country] [Noble Canyon Backpack] [From Debbie (Summer Camp)] [Fundraising] [Patrol Spirit] [Shark Patrol Computer Programming] [Comic Section]
In the last newsletter the address for the Troop web page was incorrect. Apologies to all those who tried but couldn't get in.
Newsletter articles are still needed. E-mail or bring to the troop or committee meeting. Deadline is the monthly committee meeting.
The Court of Honor listed on the calendar for the last week of July has been moved to August 6 because of scheduling conflicts. There should be lots of awards from summer camp!
We are very lucky to have temporary use of the Vallecitos Water District offices for our meetings. Unfortunately, some of you apparently don't think so and have not been cleaning up after yourselves. Please take a couple minutes to put chairs and tables back where they belong and pick up trash. Also, if you use the restroom CLEAN IT UP! Your mommy isn't going to do it for you!
A special thank you to all Scouts, Scouters, and family (including a couple sisters) who helped the VFW put American flags and flowers on veterans' graves on Memorial Day weekend. We thank those veterans who fought to give us the freedom we have today.
For the last backpack we went to Laguna. Friday night we drove
up with the people that were going on the car camp. We camped
with them at Laguna Campground, but we left them early the
next morning. That morning it was cold and the sky was clear. We
loaded our gear back into the cars and we left heading toward the
trail head
We unloaded the cars and put our packs on as soon as we arrived.
Then we set off on the trail. The trail was up hill one way and down hill the other
way because we had to go in the same way that we had come in.
The reason for that was because we did not have enough adult volunteers to
help with the car shuttle.
This helped to make this trip a little lame.
Although the trip was a little lame it was still interesting. The scenery was beautiful! The trail wove in and out of patches of oak trees and tall bushes. There were many stream crossings.
The weather was very nice during the day after it finally warmed up. There was also a light breeze in the afternoon. We also lucked out because we found a camp site with a picnic table.
On the way home we stopped for some ice cream before we drove home. We were back in San Marcos at about 11:30 on Sunday morning. All and all it was a pretty good trip.
This month we're heading to San Gorgonio and it looks like we'll be backpacking in deep snow. (-Mark J)
(Note- Word has it the six scouts who stayed at base camp with ASM's Dan Lapio and Warren Brader had a great hike to Foster Point overlooking the desert and to Laguna Lake and completed lots of advancement requirements. -ed.)

Summer Camp is coming up real soon. We will be going to Mataguay Scout Reservation. We will leave for MSR on Sunday, June 28th and arrive back in town on Saturday, July 4th. Twenty-four boys will be going to camp this year. They are: Chris W, Rauri, Ryan, Tim, Byron, Bobby, Kevin C, Eric, Ashley, Daniel, Cory, Michael S, David W, Stephen B, Jeff, Joshua, James, Jeremy, Andy, Brandon, Jared, Wyatt and Justin. The leaders will be Debbie Scheunemann, Dan Lapio and Tom Morison. SM Scheunemann will be joining the group on Thursday night.
Forty-two merit badges are offered this year. Plenty to choose from, guys. Eagle Camp is being offered again this year for Scouts of Star or Life ranks. MB's during Eagle camp are: Citizenship in the Community/Nation/World, Communication, Safety, Personal Management. The scouts attending Eagle Camp will work on a mock Eagle project.
The Scouts going to summer camp that have just joined us will be participating in the Pathfinder program. This will give you a jump start on Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class requirements. You will also have the opportunity to earn the Swimming and Fingerprinting MB's.
Time is running out to get your physicals before camp. I need to have the physical form on or before June 25th. I also need the Scout Information Form filled out and returned to me before the 25th as well. If you have "misplaced" these forms, see me and I will give you another form. (Leaders: I need these forms from you as well.)
I will be distributing the MB information signup sheets at the next Troop meeting. (-Debbie Scheunemann)
We will begin our Dudley's fundraiser at the June 4th Troop meeting. It will run for 2 weeks. You must collect the money when you take your orders. Checks are acceptable and should be made payable to "BSA Troop 651". All money will be collected in the envelopes provided to you and you will turn those envelopes in to Mrs. Cormier at the June 18th Troop meeting. Are you remembering to save boxes? Thanks!
I'm sure all of you Scouts have played team sports, so you know what teamwork means. Most football fans see a touchdown run and say, "Wow! Isn't that guy a great runner?" Maybe he is, but if you have played football you know that what really made that great run was the blockers on the line and downfield. Teamwork made the touchdown, not just one guy's talent.
The secret of patrol teamwork is having every member do his job, whatever it is. If one Scout goofs off, the patrol suffers. If every Scout does his part, the patrol is bound to be a winner.
The winning attitude is what we call patrol spirit. Is your patrol a winner? I'm not asking whether you win every contest. I'm asking: Is your patrol doing the very best it can, and is every member contributing?
If your answer is no, then ask yourself: "Am I doing my very best? Do I have real patrol spirirt?" (-Scoutmaster John Scheunemann)
