Sagada, Moutain Province

Sagada is a quaint little town 13 hours north of Manila. From Baguio, about six hours and from Banauwe about 3 hours. There is alot of hiking, mountain biking and caving to be done here. The caves are famous for their beauty and some for their coffins!

Several limestone cliffs are near Sagada, the larger one being about 300 to 400 ft high. Many of these have not been climbed before. We visited the area in December of 1998. A number of areas in Echo Valley are top-ropable and fun, but botlign would require quite a lot of time.

As our visit was short, we only got to bolt one route -Ganja Roof - about 5.11-, 3 bolts. It is a very prominent overhang (see picture on left- courtesy of Buchoy) right above the road on the way to the caves.

Several other areas seem very promising. The picture on the left is an overhanging wall we found 10 minutes from the road. It is very smooth, yet there are pockets to pull on.

Some bouldering problems were found. A bit furtehr down, we found a 20-meter slightly overhanging wall which we top-ropped and plan to bolt when we get back.

When climbing here, please respect the locals, ask for permission if applicable, and becareful to to be pulling on the coffins or human remains when climbing!
