The Pack 855’er

Another school year has just about come and gone and I would personally like to thank all of you for a fun, successful, and a fairly smoothly run year. Just about everyone has been very helpful and cooperative and I look forward to some great Pack summer activities and to a great Scout Year in the Fall of 1998!

The Pack had a hugely fun and successful Spring Camporee two weekends ago down at Camp Wisdom. The Pack brought home the Almighty and Exalted Silver Skillet for having the Best Pack Campsite at Camporee, as well as Third Place in Knots for the Jaguars and Third Place for the Flaming Dragons in Firebuilding. Uh-oh, looks as if we might have some future pyromaniacs among us!

I would personally like to thank all of the Webelos and their parents for all of their hard work and making this the smoothest Camporee I have ever attended! A special thanks to Ron Costa (a friend of the Aiwohi's) for the use of his GREAT trailer! A great time was had by all and … NO MUD THIS TIME!

And now on to Den News …

The Flaming Dragons have continued kicking up sawdust and making nails fly this past month. They have been busy making tent totems for the above-mentioned

Camporee while working towards their Craftsmen pin. They also slung a lot of paint in the Alman's garage painting Fire Buckets for the above. In their spare time at the Den meetings, they worked on knots and began work on the Traveler Pin.

Speaking of the Traveler Pin, the gang took the DART rail this past Sunday to the Dallas Zoo where they avoided the rain to check out the lions, tigers, and bears (Oh, my!). They topped it off with a stop and  supper at the  West End.

The Hawks also have a lot of sawdust in their veins! They worked with saws and made a door stop, a recipe holder and some colorful pencil holders. They also spent the past month making Indian headbands and vests and discussing First Aid.

The Jaguars have had a great month preparing for the Spring Camporee and working on the Outdoorsman Activity Pin.

They are also glad to have a Den Chief who will be working with them through next year: Nick Johnson from Troop 90. Nick worked with the boys on practicing tying knots which resulted in their winning Third Place in the Knots competition at Camporee. The boys also learned about different fire lays from him at a Den meeting.

Four of the boys attended the Camporee and had a great time participating in everything: Clint Niles, Jim Diaz, Casey Smith, and Jonathan Johnson. Many thanks to the parents who attended and participated: Robin and James Green, Jaime Diaz, and Becky and Dennis Niles. Everyone had a wonderful time.

Two of the Jaguars have also earned the World Conservation Badge by earning the Outdoorsman, Forester, and Naturalist activity pins and participating in an organized conservation project with their Den. They are Clint Niles and Jonathan Johnson. These two boys participated in the Mesquite Trash Off after the Mesquite Rodeo Parade on April 4th.

The Jaguars look forward to another successful year in Scouting as they prepare for joining Boy Scouts

As usual, the SCORPIONS have had a busy month! Most of the boys have been working on their Arrow Point Trail electives. They've been making bird feeders (more sawdust and nails flying!).

Chris Hicks (the world's best Den Chief), made each boy and leader a SCORPIONS RULE button. He's the coolest! Everyone enjoys their Boy's Life magazine and likes to share their favorite joke or story.

Everyone is looking forward to "Graduation" and all the summer activities the Pack has planned.

Please remember and plan for the Scout Expo this weekend at Texas Stadium! It runs from 10 AM thru 5 PM. It is a fun-filled day for the whole family. Everyone in a Scout uniform gets in free. Please see your Den's work schedule listed below and if you can't make your shift, please let your Den Leader know. Leaders: If you can't make your shift, please call Mark!! See y'all out there!

Finally, it is with great sadness that I announce that we will be losing a great Den Leader. Amy Madrid of the Tiger Sharks has moved to Forney, but has continued to have her meetings. She has been an outstanding leader and came into the Pack not knowing a thing about Cub Scouts. She leaves us with a strong and energetic Den and one that is totally prepared for the challenges of being Wolves.

We all appreciate the hard work you have done and the positive influence you have had on your boys! You will be missed
