The Pack 855’er - October 1997 Issue
Well, we made it back and in one piece from the Fall Camporee!! Three out of four of the Webelos Dens braved Scout-swallowing mud pits, warm and sticky weather Saturday morning, and COLD and WINDY weather Saturday evening and Sunday morning to attend (for most of them) their first Camporee. The boys and parents all had to chip in and haul our equipment to the campsite, as the field was too muddy to bring in trucks. But the boys were real troopers and helped out and a good time was had by all!!
Also, I hope everyone had a chance to make it out to Scout Fun Day, Saturday Sept. 27th. Andrew and I helped out with traffic and parking and I saw a LOT of Pack 855’ers out there. I know we had a good time out there and hope y’all did too!
Once again, we have lots o’ den news! It seems as if everyone (for better or worse) has gotten the outdoor bug and have been doing a lot of camping!
Den News
Those brave Sharks attempted a backyard campout but it was rained out in that deluge we had last week. They did manage to have their backyard cookout on Sunday at their den meeting and had a great time. They have been working really hard on their requirements for the Bear badge. The Sharks would also like to welcome to their den Nathan Holloway! Nathan transferred from another Pack and we’d like to welcome him to the Pack and to the Sharks!!
The Flaming Dragons have spent most of the past month getting ready for the above mentioned Camporee. They worked on knots, First Aid, and fire and knife safety. They have learned a lot of new, fun games including Spud and the Baggy-Clothes Relay Race. They finished out the month by having a great Halloween Party where they painted pumpkins, made pumpkin tie slides, and bobbed for apples. The boys (and parents) had a great time at Camporee. Lori and Mark would like to thank all of the Dragons parents for their help and support in making this a great and fun first Camporee for the boys. An especially big thanks to Albert Murdoch for being a Webelos Leader while yours truly got “volunteered” for campsite inspections. Y’all were much appreciated and we look forward to doing it again! The Dragons would like to congratulate their Den Chief, Andrew Alman and the Cobra’s Den Chief, Chris Gandy on Troop 138’s five ribbons they won and in coming in 3rd Overall at Camporee!! They also would like to thank Andrew for his help in the Webelos Events and for helping these first timers at their first Camporee. (PS- They REALLY enjoyed Troop 138’s skits and Brett Davis’ (Tyler’s dad) ghost stories!!) And with the Dragon T- Shirts Lori and LeNoit Fuller (Chris’ Mom), they were definitely the best dressed Den!
The Scorpions also had the outdoor bug! The den went on a camping trip to Fairfield State Park where they had a great time and saw a lot of deer. They also went on a field trip to the Fire Station and added all of their autographs to the Pack Spirit Stick. They guys also managed to find time this past month to work on their Bobcat badges, which seven of the Scorpions will be receiving tonight. They are now starting to work on their Wolf Badges. Way to go, guys!!
The Bengal Tigers had a great turn out for their first campout at Fairfield State Park. The boys have been very busy this month. They have done many activities collectively, such as fishing, camping, cycling, hiking, nature, and Halloween costumes/party. Jared Walker earned his Soccer belt loop, and Kyle Young earned his baseball belt loop. And of course they have all been very busy selling "POPCORN". Over the next month many things, are planned, such as earning their "Family Entertainment" patch and "Helping Others", along with the upcoming Fishing Derby. Way to go Bengal Tigers!!
The Diamondbacks have been busy earning their Red beads this month. They learned how to change a bicycle tire and fix a flat (maybe I should take some of the tubes in our garage over!). They also learned how to tie four different kind of knots and were busy decorating their pumpkins. They also want to congratulate their den chief, Josh Hutcheson, and his Boy Scout Patrol on their two 1st Place and one 4th Place ribbons they won at Camporee.
The crazy Cobras spent the month doing the same thing the other Webelos Dens were doing, getting ready for Camporee. Their hard work paid off as they brought home a ribbon in the Semaphore Flag Event and basically, had a great time. The Cobras also spent the month working on a variety of Sports Belt Loops.
Those Mighty Hawks have been diligently working towards their Bobcat badges this past month. They also had a great time decorating their pumpkins and have been busily baking and decorating their cakes, which you’ll see tonight.
Owen Beckett of those rascally Raccoons found his name and picture in the Mesquite News last week! It seems that Owen used his artistic skills to submit the winning T- shirt design at McKenzie Elementary where he is in the fifth grade In addition to having his picture taken with the principal, Wencie Byrd, he also received $50 savings bond. Great job, Owen!!
Finally, the Jaguars spent the past month also getting ready for the Fall Camporee. They practiced their knots, which they came in First in the Webelos events. They also worked on their pumpkins and started working on the Forester Pin. At the Camporee, they also received an Honorable Mention for the layout of their campsite. Way to go, Jags!!
Be sure to checkout the upcoming activities on the other page. We have a busy Fall coming up and hope to see all of the boys and dens participating!
Please look over the Pack T-Shirts we have for sale. They are a measly $6 each and the money benefits the Pack.
Also, look over the cakes that our Wolves made and make a bid for a great tasting, seasonal treat to take home to enjoy after the meeting.
Check out everyone’s Jack-O-Lanterns, while you’re at it!
