Gear Review: ResQ Disc

Blake, Underwater Rescue Man, hates it
"It sucks!" says Blake, our cold water survival trainer. "First of all, most people are no good at throwing a Frisbee. Second of all, this thing weighs a ton, and you'll knock the victim out when you accidentally hit him in the head with it. Third, it's wrapped for a right-handed person, and I'm a lefty!"

Well, those are all good points. But I'll tell you, that thing goes a mile when you chuck it right. I bet you could easily throw it across most rivers on the first try. And that could come in handy more than just during river rescues. I remember a frosty day on the Batten Kill, when we toasted out a canoe, jammed it under a log on the west side of the river. The next day, we had to hike in about a mile along a steep river bank chock full of brush and prickers. In wetsuits.

Finally, after sawing it free, we got it loose, but it was pretty trashed. We spent the next two hours trying to throw a rope across the river. The river was in flood stage and every time the rope touched the water, it immediately raced downstream, away from the guy trying to catch it. He couldn't run, because he was in a huge patch of brush too. We finally, somehow, got it across and ferried the boat to where we could load it up and haul it away. If we had that handy-dandy ResQ Disc along, I bet it would have been a piece of cake.

But just look at that sucker go....
