First off, I want to make one thing very clear. I am not a supporter of Bill Clinton. I think he is a smooth-talking, money-grubbing idiot who is overly concerned with the cigarette-smoking public. There are very few things, if any, on which we agree.However...
I'm sure you've read or heard about these women who claim that they had "sexual relations" with him. Paula Jones came around during the elections and this new attention-grabber jumped on that bandwagon.
I find it very hard to believe that anyone is that stupid. But let's just say he is. Is that really a reason to impeach a president? I mean, he is a man after all. What has his philandering to do with his ability to run the country? So he's a little loose in his preferences, so what? That doesn't mean he should be thrown out. It just means he needs to rethink his moral system.
But with the media, you'd think he had massacred a small village. It amazes me how out-of-proportion things are blown these days. Do we really care about Tanya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan? Not anymore, most certainly. And every little detail of the OJ trial was ubiquitous, setting an obviously guilty man free - never to be tried again.
I do understand that the media isn't merely there to serve the public, but to make a profit as well. And I also understand how important ratings are and if Channel 5 became number one by such silliness, then Channel 11 has no choice but to join them. But when did the media start to deteriorate so badly? And why is the public sucking this garbage up so easily and non-skeptically? Is America at large that ignorant?
Perhaps we are. I am writing about a group of people who would sue a person (who seems to have a dollar or two) for getting injured on their property while breaking into their house. A group of people who would sue a fast food chain for selling ice cream that is too cold.
Which came first, the chicken or the egg? The public's stupidity or the media's indiscretion?
One thing's for sure. If I am living in a country where a president is impeached because he used poor judgement on such a personal matter, it's time for me to find a living to make in London or Sydney. I simply won't belong here anymore.
