I am in a quandary. With this new job, I am told that one of my two weeks of vacation needs to be taken all at once - Monday thru Friday. As I have never before forced myself to take a full week, I figure someone is telling me to have a full-fledged escape.

Problem is, I don't know where to go.

As you may know, I have little cash. With the overwhelming debt of my life, I need to find a place to go that requires a very low budget. This probably means I'll have to drive.

Another issue is that I will want to take my dog. I am getting really strange about the dog. I can't seem to leave the house without her at my heels. Not always by my choice. Staying in a motel with a dog may prove to be a challenge, though I'm not averse to staying in the Motel 6 variety. My ethics are also sketchy enough to permit me to "forget" to mention the dog to the motel clerk.

It also needs to be scenic. The amateur photographer in me wants to capture amazing things.

Finally, anyplace I go needs to be within an interesting 1-3 day driving distance from the general Southeast. This means I don't need anyone telling me to go to LA (I've already been to that madhouse, anyhow).

I've seen most of the US (except northern New England and the Northwest) but I'd be willing to go anywhere. To be able to take a leisurely drive where I can stop at the fruit stands on the side of the road, that's what I'm after.

Just so you know, I'm already biased to Maine. I've heard it's beautiful in July. If you're from there or you've been there, please give me some input. Otherwise, I'm open to anything. I have no requirements or preferences other than those stated above. I'm liable to point to a spot on a United States map and head in that direction.

Help me escape from reality for a few days.

These are the responses that came from this question:
  1. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location:
    Where should I go?
Why? One Word: ROADTRIP! Who care's where you're going - getting there ALL of the fun! Pick a location at least 1000 miles from where you live, and make that your midway point. Figure out two completely different routes, and take one on the way there, and one on the way back.

  2. Age Group: 18-25
    Sex: Male
    Location: cincinnati
    Where should I go? Cleveland
Why?: I think you should take a road trip to.......CLEVELAND! Cleveland you say, Yes Cleveland. Cleveland is my home town and after receiving a ton of job offers (I actually had only one)I find myself far removed :( Anyways, you can visit the rock 'N roll hall of fame, the NFL hall of fame, a ton of parks, plenty of shopping and the majestic Lake Erie! What do you think? Come on, it's not that bad! Well, once you look past the miserable weather and a touch of pollution you'll see it is a hip place!

  3. Age Group: 18-25
    Sex: Male
    Location: Ellicott City, MD
Where should I go? Burlington, VT
Why? I've been to Burlington, Vermont, and it's really quite nice. It may be too far to drive (11 hrs from my house), but the ferry rides (depending on the route you take) really reward the effort. In addition, you can have the fun pressure of trying to arrive on time to catch the last departing ferry. (a fun traveling game in and of itself). Once in Burlington, the city is centered about Lake Champlagne and is basically a small college town, hosting Univ. of Vermont. So there's some fun around. Look for the festival schedules, as something is usually planned along the lake, and perhaps you'll have a good time. :) David

  4. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location: Midwest
Where should I go? Park City, Utah
Why? Park City, in (almost) spring is an almost surreal (I hate that word. In fact, it's probably inappropriate for the sentiment) - definitely decadent and pure, and clean, and therapeutic, and pleasantly exhausting (skiing, hiking, drinking) - destination for early-to-mid March. I love it. Just thinking about it makes me arrhythmic.

Do it. Just make the reservation, and go. (Mail with any questions.)

  5. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location: Ohio
Where should I go? Michigan, Lake Michigan Shoreline
Why? I've never been to Maine. But the lake Michigan shoreline has lots of beautiful lookouts, nice beaches, good hiking (and fishing), small towns with shoppes and lots of fruit stands. Go in late June early July for the cherries. It can be expensive if you stay in the resort towns, but there is lots of out-of-the-way places, off the beach, that have vacancies and are perfect for sneaking in a dog. If finances are limited, bring your tent. There are lots of state and national forest campgrounds. A word to the wise. If you do go, stay off the interstates and get out of Michigan before the weekend starts if you can. The whole state population heads north on the weekends and places can get crowded. The Friday and Sunday traffic on the interstates can also be hell.

  6. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location: Minnesota *sigh*
Where should I go? Washington DC
Why? In the spring it's incredible. Beautiful cherry blossom trees everywhere! And the aroma... Such a sweet fragrance! Things to do, sight see everywhere! Perhaps you can get a job for the president! (j/k!!) When I went out there last I brought my dog, god rest her soul, and had no problems finding decent hotels/motels that would accept my pet. The Smithsonian... Ah... A place I would like to visit someday. (http://www.si.edu/newstart.htm) Plus, within a couple of hours you can be in Virginia or real a quick trip to Boston. Absolutely beautiful! Best of luck!

  7. Age Group: Under 18
    Sex: Male
    Location: Columbia SC
Where should I go? Charleston SC
Why? Well all I can do is ask. Why not meet me in Charleston for a night? Do you know anyone else there? I pay for the room and entertainment (as usual). We can go out with some people I know down there. OR you could go camping with us in April/May or in October for the big Octoberfest party in Helen. I'll even set up a tent just for you (in case you score). ;) PS I noticed that you called yourself "psycho" in one of your sections... can I defend that categorical remark on your site?
[Please note: This guy is a friend of mine. He is not under 18 - he only appears to be.]

  8. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location: Toronto, Canada
Where should I go? stay home and save the bucks
Why? Well if your tight for cash, then don't spend.Put the funds into an IRA ( rrsp here in Canada) god forbid don't take the time off and save the money for a bigger trip to come. get some cash in the bank for a rainy day. stay home and catch up on things. upgrade the computer, paint your place(do you have a place?) read some books, bum around with some friends ect... and then treat yourself to a day at a spa may not sound like fun good luck awp

  9. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location: Salt Lake City
    Where should I go? Yellowstone
Why? Yellowstone is one of the most magical places on earth. Especially if you are going to want to take some pictures. There's so much wild-life; and the geology is pheonomonal. I've only been there once, but I remember it so well. I was able to find a natural hot tub away from everyone. I don't exactly know what it was, but it was surreal. Maybe it was the buffalo grazing a mere twenty yards away. or the moose herd in the distant background. If you've never been, you have GOT to go!

  10. Age Group: 26-35
    Sex: Male
    Location: Midwest
Where should I go? Wisconsin Dells or Anywhere
Why? First, the Wisconsin Dells. It has some great scenery, bluffs carved out by the last ice age. Rolling hills, trees, just a beautiful place, espesially if you are into photography. I was going to suggest that you contact AAA to have them send you a detailed travel map that will include campgrounds that you can set up a tent for you and your dog. This brings me to 'Anywhere'. Same idea, contact AAA, but just do a circle toure of the states around you. Good luck and have fun! :-)

  11. Age Group: 18-25
    Sex: Male
Location: Milwaukee, WI Where should I go? Wisconsin
Why? Wisconsin is a great place to visit in spring. The scenery is wonderful here. I am originally from Western Wisconsin, a rather unpopulated location with beautiful outdoor photography waiting to be discovered. The scenery is only a small part of what Wisconsin has to offer. We are the unofficial beer capital of the U.S., with many breweries and restaurants offering great beer and food for everybody. It is a great change of pace from the Southeast.

  12. Age Group: 36-50
    Sex: Male
    Location: Australia
Where should I go? Australia (of course)
Why? Well it's just a silly suggestion, you can forget it if you want to take your dog! Of course coming to OZ in July would be a waste, you need to pay a visit in summer, pref. New year's. Sydney is wild over those couple of weeks. I must admit it seems strange to have to 'book' your July vacation in March, although I've heard of Japanese planning holidays years in advance, crazy! seeya p.s. I think it's a bit unfair to lump us 36 year olds in with 50 year olds. BIG difference! [Probably true about the 36 and 50 year olds. I see them both as having vibrance. Evidently he doesn't.]

  13. Age Group: 36-50
    Sex: Male
    Location: Boston, Mass
Where should I go? Myrtle Beach SC
Why? Cheap! Some places ake dogz...check w/aaa or web pages. GREAT beaches, best on East Coast...great clubs, inexp. food/booze T-shirt shopping! Just a real safe place to go that's cheap, fun & U can do pretty much whatever U want....go after June 1th..
