I'll take dirt roads over asphalt and pavement, anyday!
I like taking a deep breath of fresh air from an elevated shooting house on opening morning. I love to hear the echo of my rifle as I take a deer for the freezer, or hit bullseye on a distant target. I love making that treck across the field on a cold, crisp, November morning. I love the fading smell of Tinks in my truck - even now.
I like the sitting around a campfire and talking with buddies about the ones that got away and the ones that didn't. I like piddling around in the fire with my boot, while listening to my buddies wish I'd catch on fire and how funny that would be...
I like sipping on a hot cup of coffee the morning before a hunt, and eating a hot bowl of deer chili during the mid-day break.
I like tossing a red roostertail into a babbling brook - hoping a rainbow is there waiting on it. If he is, I love the taste of him and a couple of his buddies cooked in a mixture of butter and lemon pepper, wrapped in aluminum foil, over a campfire - with the popping and cracking of the campfire.
After a fine meal of trout, I like laying back on my sleeping bag and listening to a pack of coyotes yelp and the haunting coo of a barred owl chime off in the distance. I love watching the sparks drift off into the sky and making a wish on a far away star.
I like blasting off from the boat ramp on a cool spring day. Making my way across a fog-laden lake that is glass-like because I'm the only one on it. That's what weekdays are for!
I'm going to take this a little bit further...
Even though we have all sorts of technology and plumbing these days, there's something about answering mother natures call while outside, that I like! Sure I can be "normal", but why? What fun is that? What man doesn't like answering that call outside, while standing there looking around? Yelling to his buddies, "hey, look at how high and far I can get it!"... "look-a-here, I can write my name!"...
It's fun and we all have done it...
It's the simple things in life that I love most... if that makes me a "redneck"... Then by God,
I are one!
