Hi everyone, I am back in Cornell already.
I am sorry I had to leave early during Odacia.
Didn't have a chance to say goodbye to everyone because the floorball game was in progress.
The game is quite fun. I think I ran more during Odacia than I did during the outing at Sentosa =)

If anyone wants to order the Op Nos 2001 pictures as physical photos, you can do so at: http://www.fujifilm.com.sg/html/publicBrowse.php3?id=3b77c359de3c7.
Simply select the photos you want printed, then submit your print request. They will mail the pictures to you in 3 working days (2 working days if you self-collect). One 4R print costs $0.50, and every set of prints incur $5.00 processing fee. Mailing is free. I think they only mail to Singapore addresses.
The above link will be valid for only 2 weeks from the date of this post. So order quick! I have ordered a set of 11 photos, now waiting for them to arrive so that I can check out the quality. Shouldn't be too bad cos they are processed by FujiFilm.
Yep, let's go to Sentosa this Sunday. Jeremy, hearing from you? And hello Mama and Theresa! Mama, how's summer sch? So enjoyable that you don't even want to come back to Singapore rite?

Hey you know what! That painting was similar to the one Christina designed for the booklet of our first Op Nos in J1, with a fluid clock lying still. Amazing HUH!! Anyone remember it?? Good to see the photographs, feel really weird not being in them. Really looking forward to seeing you all on Sunday.
Nice entry there (the thought-provoking one). There was this time where I visited this volcanic island and was terrified of walking in this pitch dark cave. I was really embarrassed about that cos I always was very proud of having done all those things we did in odac, and yet here I am stepping about wimpily in a harmless (though very, very dark) cave. It made me realise that there are things that would still scare me, regardless of whatever I did before. The same happened when I was going down a mountain and again, the hesitant steps; when I went swimming in a lake and panicked just 20m out. Well reading that entry made me remember that stretching one’s limits was something we spent two years doing, and therefore I can do it again. Thanks.

Hi people,
After looking at all the photos and reading the entries about Ops Nos, I really feel sorry that I'm stuck here alone in my apartment trying to finish up Jason's Ops Nos present, instead of reliving past memories with my friends. Sigh... which reminds me,sorry Jason, I meant to indicate something via email about your gift before Ops Nos, but my laptop crashed. Your gift is still stuck here with me, because it'll be better to give it to you back in COrnell directly. I guess I'll do the gift exchange here then.
Anyway, Jason asked for "REVERSE TIME" and this is what i got him.
http://users.hartwick.edu/~dejardinf/20/dali2.htm (hmm how do you enable the link) It is a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle of the painting "PERSISTANCE OF MEMORY" by Salvadore Dali. I was thinking of all the ways to stop and reverse time - hourglass, something to EMIT (geddit? =p) , even buying a clock and reversing the motor so that the hands will run in the opposite direction. But I think what Jason wanted is to go back into time to relive his memories of ODAC. I thought of making a collection of our old photos, but they are all in S'pore. Hence I thought this painting will be very apt. I think all our wonderful memories we've shared together will always persist last for a very long time. Hope you'd like it and will remember all the times we've shared in the 5 years of friendship whenever you see the jigsaw, which is still not completed because of all the black parts. =p (Hopefully it will be by the time you get back )
Anyway, hope that everyone's not bored by my commentary above. Really miss you guys. Take care and enjoy yourselves in Sentosa.

I'm the second to write about Ops Nos I presume. First of all, i must agree whole-heartedly that the soccer game was the best. Never had such good clean fun without feeling silly (i'm saying all this in relation to all the FOCs i've gone thru)or stupid.

When playing with you guys, kicking with all your might and totally missing the ball dun seem so bad after all. I must say that we really really must do all this again. Low standard soccer with a bunch of old friends are the perfect antidote to our busy lives. Even better than sex and chocolate. Let's try to do this soccer or ball game thing once every month or so?

Except that being the old fogeys that we are becoming, we're just gonna collapse after a full game.

looking at all the past photos brought back those warm and fuzzy feelings. Our super geena faces, the speckies...tho some of us never really changed at all (HQ and Jer).

I remember a long time ago when i looked at odac photos from an even longer time ago of our seniors...they all had that 80s feel...bad hairdos and geeky dressing. I never thought that i'd feel the same way looking at our own pictures...they really do speak volumes of the changes we've undergone...just look at our girls...they've all... grown up! total make-overs i'd say for most of them. I must add that the changes so far are for the better... at least visually we all look like we've aged a lil.

a few years down the road we'd all be receiving wedding invites.

before i really crap on into howeyang-speak...i'd just like to say some sweet and decent stuff... a big and sincere thanks to you pple who've reminded me that old friends are like an exquisite vintage...
that no matter which new friends you make out there in life...there's no beating the bunch whom you've had several years of history to speak of...which is something that i've lost sight of ever since i came into NTU.

Suddenly, Siwei's bashing on my head and chiding my lousy grammar ain't all that bad....it's just my ego bruised.

Not to mention the crazy saucy antics that i get into only when Weikai is around. We make a dirty duo.

I had lotsa fun today. those that din make it...you really missed out...DUN WORRY..there's a chance to make up for it...
we're gonna go to Sentosa on August 19th rite? next Sunday...
for more sports and antics. hope to see you guys there.

once again. thanks pple!

I'm the first to write about Op Nos 4.
Came back from Jeremy's house not too long ago. Had a great great time. Although we were missing quite a number of people, we couldn't even have enough time to catch up with everyone who was there. The illegal street soccer session, steady hand attempts at jenga, watching Andy Lau and Sammi Cheng getting fat and gross, prodding into each other's love lives, Yvonne's fabulicious New York cheese cake, gift exchange, watching Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, looking at photos (new and old), were just some of the things that made Op Nos so meaningful. It's not what we do, it's who we're with
Check out the photos under Miscellaneous (click the paint palette above). See you guys again next Sunday (when Jeremy is planning for us to go East Coast or Sentosa)!

Hello! IS Ops Nos on 9th August? I've got to go NDP parade so I'll only be available late night. Will I miss the soccer session??? Boohoohoo... haven't played for soooo long!

I'd like to invite you all to attend a production we're putting up at Jubilee Hall on the eveing of 23rd August. The entire cast and crew are provided by PSC students: The Humans students wrote the script and are acting, the music students composed most of the music to be played, and the Engineers are in Logistics Well.. not strictly so but more or less. I'll be working the lights... they wouldn't trust me with anythign more impt!

The approx 2 hour (with intermission) performance combines mime, orchestral music, singing and dance. The orchestral music is written by our very talented music students who have assured us that the music will be pleasing to the general audience n not just the arty-farty types.

As for the script, it was written with some help by Yi Sheng (for those who are familiar with Singapore's theatre scene, Ng Yi Sheng has written several plays which have received favourable reviews all round).

The plot revolves around a main character-- a music student who is having difficulties infusing soul into his music as well as a more easily identifiable problem of BGR. His muse deflects all advances, while inspiration for his art eludes him once again. The performance entitled "Longing" reflects the yearnings of our protagonist -- both in his personal life and his art.

Tixs are $15 each... All proceeds will be going to the Community Chest. Yes ALL proceeds. We're not gettting a single cent out of this, not even to cover our overheads. Alot of us have put lots of effort into this and we really hope our friends and colleagues will support us.

Anyone interested in coming?? The impt point is that this is for charity, so plz consider forming a grp to attend? Can email me woof34@hotmail.com or post on the online conv ok?

Hope to see some of you there

I haven't been writing here as much as I'd have liked somehow, but today, sitting at home and watching the lightning storm outside, and thinking about meeting up for Op Nos next week, made me a little nostalgic, so I thought I'd post something here that I wrote last year for myself.

"Whenever the night skies over me are clear enough to make out the constellations, I am reminded of my short time in Nepal. There, we had the opposite problem. The stars, glowing with a fierce intensity, blanketed the night; it was hard to pick out familiar faces from the crowd. By day, the scenery was equally breathtaking, equally unreal. Rustic terraced valleys and winding rivers ran between snow-capped peaks, laid out before me all the way to the horizon. The skies were a cloudless piercing blue. At times, high up on a ridge, in a moment of silence, surround by sky, I could feel my spirits slowly start to soar.

Does that mean I definitely enjoyed myself over there? Of course not! I had altitude sickness and puked my way up, then it was food poisoning, and I puked my way down. Climbed up with a raging fever, and rode down on a yak because I was too weak to walk. The place was so darn cold your piss would freeze. I went 15 days without bathing, and worse, 15 days of eating potatoes and more potatoes. By about the ninth day instant noodles were a rare delicacy.

Still, it was an enjoyable experience, in a way. On hindsight. It was another semester of my outdoor education, a term I first learnt during an Outward Bound course when I was 15, and which has been important to me till today. To an average Singaporean student, “outdoor education” is a bit of an oxymoron. What has one got to do with the other? Ever since that OBS course, I’ve seen that some of the much-bandied-about intangibles that one supposedly can’t learn in a school can in fact be taught and learnt, or should I say experienced and learnt, in an Outward Bound School, or through other outdoor activities.

My trip, though only three weeks short, was full of little lessons. Nothing earthshaking, but lessons nonetheless, some of which were started earlier or reinforced later in the outdoors.

I learnt compassion, when I saw a little Sherpa girl who couldn’t be more than ten carry a full duffel bag with a strap on her forehead. Incidentally I learnt helplessness too, since, with the thin air, I could not do for her what she was doing for us. The hardships I’ve faced before in my limited experience certainly pale beside lugging huge bags up mountainsides for a living. The world’s a harsh place, and there’s not much I can do about it. I’ve been somewhat motivated to do what little I can for others, ever since.

I learnt just how much to appreciate friendships. In my various puking and fevered states, how much easier it was to carry on when there were friends alongside. Not necessarily saying or doing anything, but just… being friends, and being there. I’ve wondered before at how shared adversity makes such a marvelous icebreaker; in just three weeks, virtual strangers can become friends. Existing friendships are irrevocably strengthened; somehow, there’s something in the mountains and wilds that loosens the tongue and opens the heart. (Maybe it’s like alcohol.) The friends I’ve made through my outdoor experiences are like a good pair of old boots - I’m expecting them to last a lifetime.

Still, friends are often more irritating than my old pair of boots, although they’re also somewhat better company. Friends we may be, but sometimes when there’s a job to be done, and fast, and we’re all bone-tired, and a tropical monsoon is just getting warmed up, it can get a little difficult to stay warm and fuzzy. (Unless, again, you’ve got that alcohol handy.) Teamwork, laced with tolerance, is the American Express of the outdoors; don’t leave home without it. A simple life, back to the basics in the outdoors, also frequently strips down relationships to the essentials. Extreme conditions will bring out the best, and also the worst, in people. When shit happens, you’ll see your friends in a different light, there’s no doubt. And maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll see yourself too.

I have. I have ran farther than I thought possible, went without sleep until I started hallucinating, rowed like a galley slave, and ate more potatoes than humanly tolerable. Things that seemed daunting immediately cease to be once I’ve done it. Indeed they cease to be daunting the moment I take the first step forwards. I’ve learnt that human limits are often self-imposed, learnt to see the potential in others and myself. I’ve grown to enjoy taking up challenges for the rush it gives me when I clear them, and also for the knowledge that I never need to fear or face these challenges again.

Of course, there is a flip side to all this. I have also learnt that the impossible is, contrary to some inspirational one-liners, not a state of mind. This was made patently clear to me by the Sherpa porters who matter-of-factly went ahead of us, trotting over the hill to the next village to buy eggs and back in time to prepare lunch and wait for us to straggle in. That was, how shall I say it, a little more than difficult for me. I have been faced with my own stark inadequacies, more often than it is good for my ego. Still, what I have gained is a clearer picture of my own limits. As some wise guy said, a mind once stretched can never go back to its former proportions. What one has done can never be impossible again, and what one has tried and failed can hardly seem as fearsome and unapproachable as before. It could depend on just how badly one fails, though.

If I’m making it sound like it’s all been good fun and trite lessons learnt, don’t be mistaken. Some lessons I would just rather not have. I first learnt to be dead calm during an emergency when a friend collapsed with acute pneumonia in Nepal, and had to be evacuated first by horse, and then helicopter. I experienced it again years later when two of my juniors were rafting down a river and got trapped in the sluice gate. We kept cool, got them out, applied CPR, and were rushing to the medics, when she died, practically in my arms. She was alive when I was breathing into her, and she was dead by the time we carried her off the stretcher. Were we really calm enough, fast enough, I would always wonder.

I’m not making myself out to be some sort of Crocodile Dundee. I’ve climbed a couple of hills out of thousands of mountains, spent a few months outdoors out of a lifetime indoors. I’m a city boy, through and through. Throw me in the jungle with only a Swiss Army knife and I’ll ask you where the cans for my can opener are. Battling mosquitoes in the humid heat is no more my idea of fun than the next person’s, and I doubt I would ever be totally comfortable living in the wilds, even for a few days.

I know I don’t belong there. It’s just that I’ve learnt some things out there, and I do like to visit now and then, that’s all."

I was thinking we can meet for lunch (either order in or just eat somewhere near jeremy's place...) and then in the afternoon can play games (Yvonne can bring the balderdash game?), watch TV... whatever.. or go downstairs for some soccer? Jeremy, is there any place near your house where we can play soccer or something? Can you guys bring your old photos? I think it'd be nice to look through them again. And we can cook something simple for dinner.. (pasta? I'll cook.. =P Any other ideas? tell me.... ) Watch NDP (?) during dinner. Gift exchange after dinner. And then whatever else...

Haven't had a largish batch outing for a long time, although we missed the presence of the East Siders who prolly felt that Boon Lay was just too damn ulu. (who can argue...) Anyway we ate a cake, sang a song, and all the usual. Got him a badminton racket so he has no more excuse to suck. Played a board game where we discovered Alan (and me) to be the biggest bullshitters (and bullshit detectors) of the group. Looked through Yvonne's holiday photos. (damn, anyone can take nice pictures with such scenary) Watched TMNT. (don't ask...) Got thrashed by Hq at puzzle bobble.

I didn't tape it but I watched it. Not as entertaining as how the press put it. In fact I thought the newspaper reports somehow cast shame over the Lions. The goals weren't great, the Lions fought hard, and the Devils played a fool. At least that's what I think.

Last I heard is that Op Nos is on National Day, 9 August. Siwei confirm please? And I just realised that college day only starts at 1pm tomorrow. I hope there will be odacians there in the morning cos I'm planning to drop by in the morning. By noon I would prefer to leave for lunch and movie already. So I'll still be at the rockwall/odac corner at 10 tomorrow. Jason, and whoever's going, I'll see you there!

Okay let me try to organise things a bit. Those who want to go back for college day, meet at the rockwall directly yar? I'll be there about 10am. Then let's go Ghim Moh for lunch at 12pm, and those who can make it can join us too. After lunch let's go for a movie, options still open (Jurassic Park, Shaolin Soccer, etc etc). After that, impromptu lar, maybe bum around, walk around, then go for dinner. If you are joining us after lunch, call me at 96230020 mobile to arrange where to meet, ok? Hope to see a good response...dying to see you guys!

Sorry guys, some of you were wondering if there was going to be anything on Tuesday. I was kinda busy with my school stuffs so couldn't get down to organising anything. Also response has been pretty bland, on the conv at least. But then, shall we have one on this coming Saturday? I will most prob go down for college day, just for a while. Some of us can do that, then leave early and join the rest somewhere else and do something. How about a movie? Jurassic Park 3? Shaolin Soccer (i know it's a Stephen Chow flick but I've heard very good reviews )? Anything lar, sounds good?

Hey Weikai! Welcome back! Definitely want to meet you soon especially after having missed the opportunity back in Dec/Jan. Let's have a batch 12 outing with as many people as possible soon... =) Btw, I just watched Memento last night and it definitely is better than many movies I have watched of late (although my sample size is probably small anyway... heh). Do try to catch it if you have the chance. Not so good though is Jurassic Park III, which basically reeks of an overspun money maschine with staid scenes. Then again, it's my personal opinion and you be your own judge. Later~

Well... actually... the first person to line up was there on Friday morning. Yes. You heard me right. Friday morning. The tickets were being given out on Sunday morning. Anyway, we did go a bit too late lah. If we'd been there earlier in the afternoon, we would have had a chance, since they finished giving out the tickets at around 4+ pm on saturday. =)
Oh well.. too bad.

One more thing -- Jeremy suggested that we go to this place to watch the NDP parade. And I was wondering if you guys would like to hold Op Nos on National Day instead. Cause at least on that day, EVERYONE will definitely be free (as in there won't be any ECA or whatnots...). Then we can combine that with watching the NDP. That means no Ubin, but *sigh*... looks like a bunch of people weren't too keen on Ubin anyway... (though there were others that WERE keen).
ok? can?

Harlow.. haven't been here a really really long time.. so I thought I'd pop an entry.. Went down with Siwei, Chunda, Penny and Jason today to try and get NDP tickets.. We did it in the true Singaporean spirit, preparing to turn up 12 hours before the official start of the great ticket giveaway.. But then.. well.. Apparently.. all of us have been caught out of the loop.. Singaporean development has advanced far beyond any of our expectations and roughly 16 hours before the START of the official opening hours, all the tickets have already been given away..so..tata... sighs.. but well.. we had a good dinner..a great chat.. and we got lost trying to get out of Taka... sigh sigh.. all alone now... all alone...

So don't wait. And if anyone wants to come to National Stadium to join us, COME !!! We don't really have enough people to help collect tickets.

Hi Penny... the gift exchange thingy can be anything. YOu can ask for something intangible, like some people did during our inaug -- someone asked for friendship and got a paper boat (from Alex, if I'm not wrong =P) called "Friend"
You know... things like that. Or if you actually want something useful, you can say that too. Or you can ask for something really ludicrous and see what the giver comes up with. =) yah?
And Jason.. I want to go out for dinner on Friday. Sorrie didn't reply earlier.

I want to go NDP /preview too! Suzhen and Jill sure did think we were mad! =) But the mood was infectious lah. Anyway, point is, I want to go too!!

Siwei, ask you bout the gift exchange thingee. Is it meant to be a funny request, like 'I want more time." (and got a paper plate with a clock face drawn on it.) or a proper physical thing like?

And Jason, sorry, can't make it for dinner Friday, cos my wisdom tooth comes out on Thursday, and I don't think I'll be able to eat properly.. Can arrange something some other day?

My bicycle was attacked by a rooster today. Jungle fowl, now that I think about it. I cycled to Yuling's place (Yuling? Whozzat? Ask Jeremy to remind you) to get something from Jeremy. This rooster strolled out while I was wheeling my bike through a void deck. I admired his bright green and brown and other coloured feathers while he admired (I thought) my bike. So we were peacefully walking, and I stopped to watch the rooster watch my bike. Apparently he decided my bike was a rival rooster and he began to jump in the air and whack the rear tyre with both feet. I walked away and it followed. Then I tried to scare it away but roosters are considerably less cowardly than dogs. (Some people might remember me coming to school with some brightly coloured wounds in JC-after being chased by dogs while I was biking. Animals seem to have something against my bicycle.) Anyway I hurriedly got on the bike before he decided to have a go at me too. He let out a victory crow after I left. Quite malu. Defeated by a rooster. How to handle normal (tech) kids? Seeing them up close and personal during my 2 week attachment right now.

Theresa, those fireworks would still be some arbitrary distance away.

Hi everyone... Just wondering if anyone is interested in going for the NDP parade this year. THe preview is on July 28th, and the actual parade, of cos no need to say lah.. =) TIckets will be given out on Sunday, July 8th, and they'll only announce the venues of the distribution centres on the day before. Apparently, you go there and take a queue number, but you don't have to actually stand in line all the time. But I don't think you can leave the premises once you take the queue number. I think you'd definitely have to stay overnight to be able to get tickets, but i'm not entirely sure how early on Saturday you'll need to go. Anyway... for the actual day's parade, each person can get two tickets. For the preview, each person can get four. People who are interested in going, please say when. I think I'll definitely be going regardless, so just post a reply on the conv, or email me at sy.wei@cornell.edu. Tell me:
Whether you wanna go to the parade (which one)
And whether you can queue up with me
We'll see how things go.. yah?
Do come... I think that after this year, I'm not ever going to be so free or so on to go and line up for tickets again, and I think it'll be a nice outing for our batch, yah?

Yeah, I read the odac mailing list stuff. I tot the whole big hoo-hah about the virus issue and tommy's tone was quite fun. I think I'm a bit abnormal, coz I got this warm fuzzy feeling from the whole thing. It's like "oh, tt's just like odacians, to jump to each other's defense" that kind of thing, and to have this thing about odac being one big family, etc. Who the heck is this tommy guy anyway? (I'm starting to sound like him) He claims to be in batch 16, but tt's not possible if he's a uni sophomore as he said, coz the current batch of j1s are batch 17 right? He doesn't sound local also, coz his english is like, a little weird. Just a thought=>are we sure that he's from rjc odac?
