hi everyone, Chunda and I are in London now. We are staying over at Penny's place. It has been a very enjoyable Christmas Day, we basically eat, sleep and watch TV for the whole day =)
Here're some photos taken using Wing Git's digital camera, watch the chef in action

Wow wow wow, flood of entries yep thanks theresa for account. what was wenyi's little incident with his bike? i watched harry potter wihtout reading the books first, and after reading books, must say that books are better. one thing is the movie failed to convey the brit humour thing. but quidditch was nice to watch. agree with one critic that no page in the books is dull.

wow weikai. not the first sis to get married right? u'll have very smart nephews and nieces. feel very much like a kid now. ur sis looks very mature. president scholar bro-in-law. wowwowwow

think better apologise for comment on shady business? can't tell if anyone was offended or not. just thought interesting to update on batchmates' lives.

yep, balderdash is fun! played it the last time. no batch thingy would be complete wihthout it. must bring everytime ok yvonne?

lots of interesting movies to watch. lord of the rings is a must? heard the visual effects r really good. and also want to watch "the others" starring nicole kidman. last scene with little girl saying "mummy, r u mad? i AM ur daughter" sends shivers down my spine everytime i recall it. even now i feel like there're goosebumps on my head. debating whether to watch vanilla sky. coz think tom cruise has ego size of the universe. realise most of his movies don't really have much plot? always centres instead on the lead char, i.e. him. heard that "ocean 11" is a fun show to watch. ah, but limited resources, i.e. money.

Hey Theresa, thanks for the account of what happened, I was actually silently waiting for someone to give one. Sorry for my absence, the notice was early enough, but the day fell unfortunately on one day after my sis' wedding. I was so tired from the wedding I slept more than 1/2 the day away. I hope no food was wasted for me cos I did tell Jeremy that I may not be able to make it. So so sorry.....

hey there. Saturday at alan's place triggered some memories, from Inaug to the J2 Farewell. Remember ALL THIRTEEN of the girls
attempting to hide under the long table with the catered food and being very amused with ourselves? Still smile very widely thinking
about that. Here is an account for those unavaoidably detained. Where were the rest? There was food for you too. Siwei, I did take a
few photos but none of the really exciting part, ie cooking, where you can witness Jeremy conscientiously mincing beef (for thirty
minutes I believe) and proclaiming that he might take up a career "butching" (yes, those were Mr English Teaher's exact words), Alan
dependably hovering around in case anyone needed anything, joshua expertly cooking up some bolognese, me making chicken, haoyang
cutting fruits, yvonne calmly organising the whole thing (while whipping up a spaghetti cream sauce), and alan's maid making guest
appearances everytime no-one knew where something was. HQ took good care of the Ribena. Wenyi arrived late after an incident
with his bike and walked the entire way. Following dinner we attempted to watch a terrible, terrible movie, and then America's
Sweethearts, which put us all nearly to sleep. Then we played Balderdash, which was terribly entertaining. Well maybe next time we
organise one we should do it well in advance so we can all be unavoidably present.

Hihi! It's been a long time since I posted anything... thot i'd juz read what u guys have been doing (since i didn't turn up for Sunday's gathering). Hey, quite surprised to see my name mentioned somewhere... Thanks for your concern. I'm doing something that is perfectly legal, don't worry. Some of you might have heard of it, it's called multi-level marketing. There was an article in the papers recently, differentiating between MLM and pyramid selling. Go read about it! It's fun and it's something I haven't tried b4! The reason why I sounded "shady" in my email because I wanted to keep it brief. Pple have no patience to read long emails. Ok, seems like it works! It's stirring up interest!

Haoyang, the lines Xinyan quoted do sound shady to a layperson (e.g. if my parents were to read them, they would find it shady too). You know that we are not implying that she is indeed involved in some shady affair, it was obviously a tongue-in-cheek thing. And I am not speculating, I'm just wondering, that's all. Thanks for enlightening us though. Good that she is venturing into something, and I hope she will be successful in it. HY, you seemed to be bothered about this career thing. Care to share more with us? You seemed a little sympathetic to us guys walking on the conventional line....why so?

I just watched Harry Potter today, and no doubt it was good, but the book occupied that special spot first. It was hard to enjoy the movie as it is, cos more than half the time, you'd tend to compare it to the book and make silent comments. Eventually, I got to tell myself that, hey this is a movie, they can't do it totally book-style. For e.g., some highlights in the book turned out to be meaningless scenes in the movie, like Norbert the Norwegian Ridgeback. To a person who haven't read the book, he would just be an item to represent Hagrid's meeting with Prof Quirrell in the bar, but in the book, Norbert is more than just that.

With regards to the early-Christmas thingee (it's changed to the 16th now), I should be able to make it, but can't really confirm yet cos the day before is my sis' wedding. I don't know if there are any after-events to take care of or not.

Jeremy's in-charge... and itz gonna be on a sunday nite (23/12). When u really think abt it... itz scary.. we're all starting to tink seriously abt careers, income, ethics... before u noe it, we'll be attending weddings and visiting one another for Chinese New Year =P as for myself, am still busy enjoying watz left of my schooling life... btw... i hear next hols is the 'Reservist-call-back-hol'... haf oredi gotten my SAF 100 liaoz... anybody else?

i'm wondering why u guys are all speculating what ruth is doing...
can just call her right? her number is 97942467.
by the way, she is doing some entrepreneurial venture, i ASKED her...
and it's not shady at all. altho i haven't seen a presentation of what she's doing, she's marketing health products from Royal Numico, which is a very reputable Dutch company seliing pharmaceuticals and baby food i think.
those of u who are interested should go ask her to tel you a little about it, coz i think that the health food and product is going to grow in the next few years or so coz of all the aging pple. it helps that u might want to have a go now...

it's good that she's getting off her butt and starting off some alternative career venture, very relevant to the current conversation we have now right?

In a way, i am a little envious of all the PSC and police(heheh) scholars, you get an annual allowance and a guaranteed recession-proof job waiting for u after grad. plus a fast track if u're a high flyer as well. I'll prob have to fend for myself along the side, but i guess it does pose as a very challenging alternative too. I too want to find something else to do with my career, do some entreprenuerial thing and avoid the whole employment thing. I really have nothing to lose, and tons of experience to gain. Definitely can't do all that when i'm like in the middle of a "career" with some company...it might be too painful to try to venture away...

but good luck all u pple who are seeking a different life, siwei, it's great that u are tinking of an alternative besides the incumbent bohemoth of an organization that is PSC aka Singapore aka PAP, u are too capable to be labelled as another civil servant, just that too bad.. u signed on the dotted line, gotta pay off ur dues first... but all the best yeah?

Btw, i watched harry potter with sandra. She loved it. I fell asleep till quidditch, the game looked quite exciting, like some turbo charged game of handball cum hantam bola, but i don't identify with any of the characters in the show...so i found it a chore to watch.

Spy Game's definitely an easier show for me to digest, a strong recommendation for those who love espionage thrillers.

well, at least she's getting off her butt and starting something..

Siwei, I've watched Harry Potter!! And it's good, though the book is much better, but it's definitely worth watching. And for those of you who think I'm crazy, hmm, watch or read first before commenting! =) Have some friends here who refuse to watch the movie cos they think it's 'kiddy', but oh well, their loss...

Speaking of working, urgh, that's really soon. Just wondering, has anyone thought bout like if you're asked to do something that you don't agree with, but you have to do it just the same? Do you think you'll become disillusioned or something?

Anyway, I heard from a few friends that it was pretty good, and that the only parts that were let-downs were the Quidditch matches -- my friends said that the scenes were very obviously computer generated..
Ei.. Jason, how come you so "eng" to be reading three Harry Potter books now.. you don't have finals to study for meh?

wah Theresa, 28 days is a lot of leave. Most people start with 14 or 21 days.
I will rather study than work, can go on "strike" whenever I feel maxed out.
I don't think you can whipped out your leave if your boss doesn't think you deserve a break
and the most important thing is I am only responsible to myself while studying

I think Harry Potter is really interesting... now I know why people keep talking about it...
read the first 3 books in 3 days... think that's a record for me

HEY! Thanks, xinyan! I think she is psychic. Yes the thing about really working...well right now I'm working as an assistant research chemist, playing a tiny role in hunting down drugs from natural sources, trying to figure out chemical structures from some complicated spectra.... it's interesting and it really makes a difference to be doing work with a goal rather than mindlessly doing expts in the lab in Uni. Have a long way to go before becoming good a this, but it's something to look forward to. Thing about having a real job is having to be careful about responsibility (may cost me my job) and trying my best even in the face of ah-new-graduate-doesn't-know-nuts people, as well as take care about getting along with these same people. That's quite tiring, sometimes i just feel like throwing them all out the window. It's "affiliated to nus" btw, so one good thing is that i get 28 days leave, as it depends on the degree. Funny to be talking abt this when no-one else is, but, really, it is nice to know you have a bunch of days in your back pocket you can whip out when you really need a break. Oh and the comp is privatising soon, so I don't have to work saturdays anymore soon!! whoohoo! and it wont be affiliated to nus anymore either!

Xinyan, how's the discovery about the Ruth thing? Any updates? It certainly sounds shady to me... Maybe she is starting some entreprenuerial venture...

but anyway, what are you pple back home doing now? and the uk pple leh? hmmm.. i realised that my life is so centred around planning for the next break... which prob isn't good... can't believe that in another half a year, I'll be saying goodbye to long breaks for the next 30 years of my life... darn... doesn't feel good that I'm dreading it so much... I think it's not that I want to stay a student forever. It's kinda fun, but there is sort of a time for everything, and I think I do wanna get out into the real world. Still.... I'm not so sure I'm looking forward to a career with PSC. If it were just any old job that I take just as a stepping stone after my graduation, that'll be fine, but the thought about having to plan out a career (as opposed to a job) isn't really sitting very well with me now. Keep putting it off, but I guess eventually I'll have to face it.. darn...

Looks like I missed out on quite a lot here. Theresa, I thought you were in Germany or something? How come you're back here? For those of you who know Wensi, she's probably going to teach rgs gep full time. Exciting isn't it? I can't imagine a nicer job ('cept be paid tons of money to play comp games). All I know about the xbox is that investors of microsoft are not happy coz the launch of xbox is going to cost them short term profit margin. Apparently other MS products like software cost very little to make. Something like the overall proft margin's going to go down from 88% to 83% coz of the xbox. Like the Rosyth boys used to say: "Big fat hairy deal." Talking about $$$, look what Ruth posted on the ntu public folder:
"Dear all,

If you are looking to start your own business, have drive, are open-minded or just want to know more people, drop me an email at s7902048f@ntu.edu.sg.

and today after i covered some launch, i managed to sneak in a round of arcade games and shopping before coming back to write the story.

Hrm... first things first.. Jason .. what on earth were you doing running a random search like that. Second, yes it's really weird that our webpage came up as the first hit, esp since (1) there are plenty of other news pages that should contain that phrase (2)that wasn't even the exact phrasing that I used (3) the entry that came up on the search page wasn't even the one that contained that phrase...
Wierd (yes.. with an "ie") =P
how come no one else writes in here anymore? Must just be the people like Jason and me who don't get enough of a life outside of the computer...

Hmph ! First time that we can vote and yet we can't... *sigh*. Although I'm not sure that I would have been able to travel all the way to DC in the middle of the school term just to vote, anyway..
Still, I think that it was just a little too convenient for them to call it off.
Did you guys read the article about there being no lunch time rallies cause of security fears? Personally, I think it's all rubbish.

Penny, I don't think you need to inform anyone. The elections department will strike your name off the register if you don't vote, then you have to get your name back on the list by giving them the reason.

hihi... =)
I'm presently at my roommate's house in Long Island, NY. Had so much fun over the past two days... her parents are really nice and funny. Even just sitting around the house and talking is so fun. =) And we went to the beach at the eastern tip of Long Island and blah, got a pumkin at the pumpkin patch for halloween and whatnot.... it's amazing that even after three years of staying here in the US, I'm so uninitiated into the US culture.. so interesting to see the other side. =) And then we made a fire in the fireplace, sat on the rug in front of it and toasted marshmallows -- it's like the usual stuff that I always read about but never did.. so cool.. =PP I'm leaving for the city tomorrow to visit a friend of hers who's studying in Columbia... and then after that, it's back to Cornell for us *sigh*.. this was such a wonderful vacation I really don't want it to end.. oh well.. at least we still have one and a half days more. =)
I'll put up some photos once I get them developed and scanned... I hope that you guys are all doing well wherever you are.. =) Weikai... I should learn from you and make a homepage. Been wanting to do that forever, but never got down to doing it cause I don't know where to start but everytime I see yours (or anyone else's for that matter), I'm always inspired.. =) Must figure out how to do the graphics, though.. =) oklah.. will write another time. take care, people.. =)

Not much money left...esp after I got the camera. Nope it's not 1.5k...if I have that kind of money to spare I would have gotten Canon G2, or Canon Pro90is. Those are really good.
I'm not into video...only got a Sharp Videocam...non-digital. Find it too much of a hassle to shoot videos cos you got to make everything coherent, and have to do editing. That's where the fun lies actually but I don't think I'll enjoy it Mass comm students like you would like it.

hallo everyone. yep, i am finally back in action = ) was busy with my work over the past fortnight. guess everyone is just as busy.

i'm taking sailing for PE now and it has been fun trying to sail in a lake (+ some swimming... after my boat capsized). I've found that I have absolutely no sense of direction in water because the boat will always go the opposite direction I want it to be
Controlling the rudder is counter-intuitive to me. I believe it will be nicer to do it in Singapore where the weather is a bit warmer... the sun here is pathetic and i can't get a tan...

hi guys. Weikai i really like your photos. I have just a mediocre camera, but a GOOD autofocus one, and I'm always balancing it on window ledges / car tops / anything stationary in order to catch night-time images without the flash. Am currently relief teaching at rgs, and discovering I like it a lot. What a terrible lot of people we were then! Brings back old memories of speaking in rhyme to every single teacher just cos it was so amusing (to us), or having haircuts in the classroom. Most are sweet, while some are a real pain (constantly fixing me with a 'what-the-hell-is-she-talking-about kind of stare just to unnerve me). In the meantime, I'm looking for a research job at one of the biomed places. By the way, for those who shared the same teachers as me, we are still fondly remembered. Amazing.

Hi I've been OOA for sometime too, same excuse, been really busy with school stuffs. Final year already so got my final year project and also a design project to worry about, not mentioning the assignments and exams coming up. Sometimes I really wish I'd graduate soon and get out of all this shit but I know I don't really mean that cos there's more shit outside waiting for me.

Siwei, for the last modified thing, I don't think you need javascript. Microsoft Frontpage has this option to add that in. Everytime you edit and save the page the date gets updated automatically. The catch is, of course, that you have to edit and save your page in Frontpage.

I've been taking some photos around Singapore. Please visit my website and give comment yar! Thanks

oh.. another thing. I have a question for those people who know webpage stuff... you know how webpages have this "last modified" thingy at the bottom of a page? how do I insert that, and make it update itself automatically? (as in, everytime I save a page, it will automatically insert in the proper date and time). I'd preferably want to have it in the format "September 20, 2001. 8:15 pm"
I suppose I need to insert some javascript code, right? do any of you know the code for that? Or know where I can find it?
thanks... =)

The conv's been awfully quiet these days. No one has written for over a week. Hmmm... So how's everyone? Still alive, or dying under the weight of work and all. Chris... you've started work already, right? How is it? The first among us to really start a career, huh? =P Theresa? Haven't heard from you in a long while either. Med school people? How are the clinics coming along? NTU/NUS people should be more than halfway into the school year already, right? Hmm... and UK people haven't even started... *grrr*.. =P
Anyway... school over here is really starting to weigh me down -- thinking of dropping one of my 5 classes, mainly cause i can't understand the lecturer at all.. he's some guy in the government department, with a strong southern accent and who mumbles. Thing is that I think the subject matter is potentially very interesting, but then everytime he starts talking, the end of his sentence always degenrates into mumbling, and I can't catch what he's saying. And it doesn't help that I always go for that class 5 minutes late cause I have badminton before that, so I don't even know what the general topic for that day is. Oh.. speaking of badminton... Marvin's in the same badminton class as I am -- it's supposed to be some intermediate badminton class, and a lot of the people in there are actually quite good. Quite a challenge to play with them, but then the problem is that I always get thrashed, and I don't really learn anything cause the silly teacher doesn't really teach -- she just walks around. Marvin says that's why the class is free.. *sigh* oh well..
eh.. someone write something leh. I check this place everyday and there's never anything new

yeah... it's really news tis time. I was quite indifferent when my friend told me about it over icq. But after seeing all the pictures and reading the reports it does sound scary. I know it's weird saying this but somehow i feel lucky being in Newpaper at tis time. Got the chance to see how the reporters work and different ways to angle the story. Its really a world of difference compared to some of the no-brainer stories i do sometimes. And this brings to my mind tat life is unpredictable. Make the best of everyday!

The people jumped out not because the building was collapsing but because the room was exploding in a ball of fire. With that kind of temperature, things combust on their own and they probably jumped out without thinking. Also they might have been thrown out by the force of the explosion.

Yeah it's big news, it's all the media over here can talk about. I feel the same way as Siwei, as long as my friends are all right, it's just like another news event. Plus the death toll wasn't as high as previously thought. Instead of 50k, it's more like 1200 or something. I can't help feeling worried though, like I don't know. WWI was also sparked by a terrorist act, so... Anyway I hope something happens to the Taliban because of this, whether or not they were responsible. They're scum. Yeah I know, I'm bad.

yeah... I was actually surprised when my parents called to find out if I was ok... cause NYC is 5 hours away... and I didn't think terrorists were too likely to come knocking on COrnell's door... but whatever. It was quite a big thing on campus, with activities being cancelled and all (cause alot of people here have relatives and friends in the city), with support groups and stuff being formed... which is good.. but honestly, I'm feeling rather... erm.. removed from all this, which makes me feel weird, cause all these people around me are getting all weepy and emotional, even if they don't know people there in the city, and they're making it sound as if... in the light of the event, it's not right to do anything in your normal routine or even think about anything else other than the attack. Maybe it sounds selfish, but I don't know anyone there. It's a big tragedy, and I'm really disgusted at the terrorists, but I'm not really thinking of the incident in terms of anything other than a news event. My housemate (she's with SPH) was saying that it's probably going to be the biggest news event of the year. Sad how the biggest news events are always tragedies, isn't it?
