NUS starts next week. Haven't really had a good holiday since most of the

4) No gift exchange.
5) Bring boardgames, CDs, and all forms of entertainment. I've a radio/CD player. Have mahjong as well
6) All are welcomed to stay over. Should have enough space, though not necessary enough beds.

Hi Penny... I think price wise.. M1 is definitely better... the Prime plan is $28 for 400 min and 400 SMS. For Singtel, a comparable price ($22) only gives you 200 min. In terms of coverage, prob not much difference lah. i think Starhub doesn't have dualband, though...
And yes, starhub still has free incoming calls.
Singtel has free incoming SMS. some guy at M1 told me that M1 charges for incoming SMS (as in it's counted within the 400 free SMS), but i think he got it wrong...
u noe... if someone in your family already has an M1 subscription, you can get a supplementary line with 400 min for only $10. But that means it's billed to that person lor... depends on whether you want that..
Thu Jul 11 10:57:09 2002 GMT
Entry:
Just wondering, does anyone have any opinions on whether Singtel, M1 or Starhub is better? Eh, are there still free incoming calls on Starhub?

Hi, as of now, we have a positive response from 10 people. Will appreciate it if the rest can give me some form of response. Tx
Got a request though. I'm wondering if everyone will prefer to hold it on 27 July instead. I understand that Penny mentioned that she may not able to make it then, but which of the two dates is better for everyone?
Anyway, hope we can have as many people as possible. Seeya.

Hallo. I've just sent out this email. If you did not recieve it, pls send me an email at jc273@cornell.edu. Tx. Hope to see you at Ops Nos.
Hallo people,
How's everybody doing? It's been quite a while since I'm back for Ops Nos, and have not seen some of you for a long time. I hope everyone can try to come for this Ops Nos which will be at my place.
Date: 3 Aug 2002 (Sat)
Time: 2pm (Tentative)
Place: The Clearwater (6 Bedok Reservoir View #16-16)
Prob meet at Bedok MRT
We'll probably play some soccer in the afternoon, then have dinner. We could have some board games like taboo afterwards, so bring out some of your most interesting games. As for dinner, I suggest a small BBQ by the pool supplemented with some cooked stuff. It will be good if someone can offer to cook beehoon, fried rice, some salad, some dessert and maybe sandwiches.
As for the gift exchange, we'll probably have some form of it. I'll keep you people informed.
Yupz, that's about it. Most importantly, pls REPLY to this email to tell me:
1) if you can make it.
2) what you think is good for dinner, and whether you can prepare some food.
3) your contact numbers. hp, home phone, email.
4) stuff that you have and can bring eg. ball, games, blah...
5) if you want a gift exchange
Okay. Thank you for reading so far. Hope i didn't leave anything out. Once again, pls hit the REPLY button now. Hope to see you all at Ops Nos.

Hi people. As of now, I think 3 Aug seems to be the best date. Try to keep that date free, please. HQ, you mentioned you're not sure about that date though. I guess, there's always someone busy on some weekend or another, so I think that shall be the tentative date for now, but do reply with any strong objections and soon.
Then there's the gift exchange, or am I wrong about that tradition? Anyone with special requests or ideas about it, please email me directly at jc273@cornell.edu I have some funny ideas in mind, but more are welcomed

Yes, I have my first taste of work and not liking it.
Anyhow, I propose a Sat afternoon/nite thingy. Maybe play soccer or captain's ball, swim... Have a small BBQ or potluck. I think my place has a small Karaoke room, so we can do that as well. If anyone wants to, you are welcomed to stay overnight. There's mahjong and enough beds.
And yes, the date for ops nos. I suggest the 27 July (Sat) or maybe national day weekend. So what say you? Give some feedback. When's good, when's not? What's good, what's not? Yupz. Haven't seen some of you for a long long time. So must get everybody.

How's everyone doing? I'm still at California... long trip huh... Anyway, I visited Yosemite and it's really nice! I wonder what it's like doing white water rafting there. Sad to say, I was on a conducted tour with my family, so didn't get to try all those things you mentioned, Siwei. Only managed to visit a few landmarks like El Capitan and Bridal's Veil... then gotta leave. Hope to come back some day to try those outdoor stuff. I believe backpacking is alot more exciting but I also realised that a tour package really saves you the hassle of looking for transport and accomodation. The 7-day trip was really value for money... we even went to Grand Canyon, Disneyland, Universal Studio, Las Vegas etc... though schedule a bit tight. Hmm... now that I'm back in Berkeley, been doing my own sightseeing. Finally went back to Marin County today... will be exploring that part over the next few days. Now I don't feel like going back to Singapore. =)

Ruth, by the time I write this, I guess you'll already be back home or something, but if you were in Yosemite, you should really try some of the trails, if you're interested in doing something outdoorsy... =P Half-dome's nice... =) Of course, if this is too late.. well.. there'll always be another time. =)
Or if you already did... did you like it? Did you stay in the log cabins that they have in Yosemite? And put your foodstuff and toiletries in bear-proof cabins? =P
Anyway.. yar... SF is very windy... think it's like that in a lot of big cities... something to do with the tall buildings creating wind tunnels and the blah...
oh, btw, i'm back home now. Just got in this morning. =) If anyone wants to offer their house for another World Cup viewing.. i'm game.. =) Better yet.. if anyone wants to play soccer... count me in =)
Oh yeah.. one more thing... who's organising Op Nos this year? Most overseas pple will be back, right? And pple like Marvin are *actually* around this summer !! *gasp*... =P

Hey, glad to read so many interesting entries on overseas trips. Well, I'm in California now, visiting my brother in Berkeley. I love this place... weather is cool! Been to San Francisco the past few days. The sights were beautiful. Finally got to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Too bad I didn't get off the bus on the side of Marin Headlands cos my parents prefer bus rides. Marin Headlands is a wonderful place for hiking. Nice greeneries and you can look down at the blue sea... Been to Coit Tower too. Haha... I actually managed to convince my parents to walk up with me. My dad was actually very intimidated by the steep slopes at first. The view up there was worth the walk. Really awesome! I'll be going to LA for a week after this. Yay! Will be visiting the long talked about Yosemite and Disneyland. I can't wait to be there! Guess my trip is really long... so there's still time to pop by Fisherman's Wharf again when I get back to Berkeley. Btw, all these dun sound too odacky huh... yup, i think so too. Hopefully I can come back with friends again and try more outdoor stuff. Heard that there's horse-riding and white water rafting at Lake Tahoe. Anybody been there? But then again, how do these pple keep warm? Wind is so chilling here, even in the summer... Hmm... for those who are travelling or watching the world cup, etc, enjoy yourselves. As for those who still have projects or school, hang in there... hope we can meet up soon.

Namaste!
My time in Nepal is coming to an end. Have mixed feelings about it, sad to leave, and yet think i'm getting a little homesick,
like suddenly hit me only yesterday. Strange huh? Oh well, just got back from a week of canyoning and trekking in the annapurna area. Canyoning was great but a little not exciting enough. Maybe coz i always envisioned it to be a real adrenaline rush and all. It was a little, but perhaps too short, and too safe.
Was painful on the hands though, we had no gloves provided, ouch, so had lotsa rope burns and all. But it was nice going down waterfalls and jumping into the plunge pools, sliding down some of the waterfalls. Something different i guess, heee i had to put on goggles halfway through coz i was afraid my contacts will drop off. We were quite a sight, in wet suits, fleece jackets, helmets, and goggles.
Trekking was great! It was soo sooo pretty, the whole route and all. Think the annapurna region is so much more well established compared to the everest trek! The lodges were all so well equipped! Had flushable toilets in some, and hot showers, can you imagine?? I was pleasantly surprised but the luxuries in the midst fo the outdoors. Was expecting like everest kinda lodges etc, with nepali food only, no proper shower rooms etc. Didn't go as high, 3000 ovber m so didn't really have problem with the altitude. But yet again diarrhoea strikes! On the very first day, all of us were having diarrhoea, and vomiting. Think it was the mango we ate the day before, for this i blame alan for nto washing it properly, haha, he thinks it's not his fault though.
Oh well, but this was the first time i had such bad diarrhopea in nepal this time, and it had to be on trek. Sigh. Felt better after the first day, so i still enjoyed myself.
Loved the view, the water, the mountains and all. SObz, gonna miss this place. Wanna do the whole circuit next time. anyone interested?

Anyway, I'm going to be doing odacy stuff too, sort of.. Will be going trekking in the French Pyrenees after my project, but will be staying in pretty log cabins (I hope).
Jason: was going to reply to one of your entries (a long way back), but couldn't log in then and kind of forgot about it. Bout not having the chance to know the people around you well? Same goes for me too I guess... and now that we're going back to Singapore for good, like becoming very introspective and starting to regret.. urgh.
Anyway, I'll be back in Singapore only in mid-July, so hope to see you all. Think many of you all would have started work by then?

Wow, sounds like very exotic time in Thailand! Jeremy, other than the shopping, eating, travelling, we want to know more about this Dao and Josh! Gossips gossips.
While Josh and Jer are engaging in quite odacy stuffs, I'm opting for luxuries, heheh. Ok lah, not really that luxurious, but more domestic I guess. Will be visiting the West Coast of US, and Vancouver, and Seattle, and Hong Kong. Been spending time on reading up, booking accomodations etc. With that, I don't think it is possible for me to meet up with the East Coast people in Cornell and UPenn.

Hello everyone, I'm now using a computer in Ratchaburi, Thailand, having survived the last four days with Joshua, via broken Thai, sign language, and one strange kind man. But I shall let Joshua tell you that story. But I turned to him beside me, and told me he's not going to talk about the strange kind man, so I shall.
Anyway, on the train to Kachanaburi from Bangkok, this man (of 49) came up to us and started talking to us. We found out that he's been bringing foreign travellers back to his house to visit for quite a while. Even had two Singaporean predecessors whom he met in this manner. So Joshua and I took up his offer and stayed at his house for two nights, with his wife and two daughters. (Dao and Nat) Dao is twenty and in university, and Josh hit it off pretty well with her. Nat was more shy, and we didn't talk to her much. The man's name was Nopparat (Nop). Nop took us around some sights in Kachanaburi, like the Bridge over the River Kwai, and the Erawan waterfalls. He even passed us off as locals and we paid only 25 baht to get into the falls, instead of the 200 baht for foreigners. Anwyay, we exchanged addresses and promised to keep in touch.
Josh and I should be heading to the beach of Ko Samet to get some serious roasting soon, and then to Bangkok for shopping, massage, and various city sights.
At this point, Josh says he's done and so he's going to play counterstrike while waitng for me. What an excuse.
Yup. HQ! Who have I been busy with????? You didn't ask me out!!!... I would have entertained you... but..oh... exams... mmmm.. Yup...
Jason... haha...world cup matches. Hope you come back in time for the preliminary matches, cos that's all I'll see... I'll miss everything from the quaterfinals onwards. Going for OBS in Slovakia. Can't believe that when the world cup comes to Asia, I head off to Europe. What timing. Damn... But..well...OBS Slovakia...haha.. Its more than worth it...
See you ppl soon. Maybe by the next post, Josh and I will be on the beach in Ko Samet, sipping ice-cold tropical punch, with a babe on each arm... mmmm.....

Sawadikap! 'Tis the season for those with holidays to rub it in to those without.
Me and Jeremy are running around Central Thailand, it's been lotsa fun. Been taking every conceivable form of travel including being perched precariously on the back of a pick-up (really precariosly, it was full of stuff) when Jeremy managed to thumb us a ride. It was a short walk in but the kind souls who were bringin us in got very lost. It was kinda hair-raising. And I now have about twenty words of Thai, which combined with much gesturing and some luck, keeps me in new and interesting food. Jeremy's taste in food stops at chicken rice, durians and kway teow soup. Guess he don't travel for the food. I happen to look forward to every (cheap) meal. Those studying, hang in there yes? Not that there's much of it left...for many of us. Ah well. Can't say I look forward to working. Hmmm now where have I heard that before...

Amazing how slack I've become over the past four years... *sigh*. Right now, I'm in Marvin's room, doing anything but work. =P
Well... nice to hear that you're having a nice time in Nepal, Yvonne.. =) How long will you two be in Nepal?
Chunda's coming over to Cornell this weekend...
I'm going back home on June 3rd....
My thoughts are very disjointed...
I think I should stop talking rubbish and get back to work..

Namaste!
have been trying to post an entry for the longest time, and they kept refusing me. SObz, must be the inetrnet connection overhere or something.
okie anyway, I'm in nepal!! Have been here for 2 weeks already, time flies eh?
Love this place, can't believe i'm back again.
It's like a dream come true. Can't believe we were here 6 yrs ago, it's been such a long long time huh? Am sure that the experience 6 yrs ago was an experience of all our lifetimes, whether good or bad.
Yep, seeing all those mountains again, but no snow caps this time, and back shopping at Thamel again. Wow! I could go on and on really.
Yep, Just back from rafting at Bhote Koshi river. It's excellent. The river's beautiful, it's at the tibet border, surrounded by mountains and all. Was exciting going down the rapids and all. And i fell off the raft, sobz. right at the beginning.
It was the first rapid, i wasn't prepared for it yeah and the enxt thing i noe i was in the water. Oh well, was rescued pretty quickly, and wasn't hurt other than a big bruise on my bum, which i didn't feel until i got back to shore!
Yep, yep, we stayed at a place caleld borderlands resort. It's beuatiful! It's by the river, and you stay in big safari style tents in proper beds. There are proper hot shower houses and all.
n So much for luxury in the midst of nature huh? But it's a really beautiful place, you shoudl go there if you're in nepal. Hope to go back canyoning there when alan comes. Alan, how? It's a 2 day thingy too.
Hope to goto pokhara and do a 5 day trek from there to poon hill when alan comes, yes yet again.
can't wait for that.
Love the mountains, love being back there again. Wished i had mroe time to be away from the city and do more stuff. Met lotsa pple on the trek and they're like going to travel for months or have already travelled for months. It's amazing. Well, shall be contented with my weekends away and the trek at the end of my elective.
Meanwhile I'll be in patan hospital, it's pretty inetresting there, seeing medicine practsied without many of the technology we're used to. Doctor's are really ncie and friendly there too. Yep learning lots there meanwhile. Maybe i'll come back someday to practise medicine here. Maybe. Well, before i get all dreamy-eyed, i still havta serve out my bond for the next 6 yrs. Oh well, that's life.
Glad to hear from you guys. Ruthie, goto yosemite! You won't regret it.
Okie gotta go. Will write again when this site lets me!

My Europe trip is cancelled...not enough pple to form the group. I'm so damn disappointed.
Now I'm trying to find other places to go, most probably will settle on the States. Jason, get ready for my emails asking you for travel stuffs!
Went to the botanic gardens yesterday with haoyang and his friend Weiling from NTU, had quite a good time talking cock and sharing men's stuffs. Here's a photo of us. I hate the flash reflection on my glasses man. Please see my website too for some insect macros taken there.

Hey Ruth, all those places are in LA, which is actually quite far from SF, where your bro is... (he's still in Berkeley, right?). Well.. if you're going to be there for any length of time, you'd probably like to go to those places anwyay, but you don't have time to venture out of Northern california, there's stuff to do in the San Fran area too... In SF itself, depends on how touristy you want to be, I guess... there's stuff like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, the Cable Car rides, Coit Towers, TransAmerica Pyramid (is that what it's called? I can't remember.. that's just a cool-looking skyscraper.. ) blah blah blah...
It's been a while since I went there, Marvin was just there over the spring break.. maybe he has suggestions.. =P
And then if you can drive over there, you can go wandering around the 17-mile scenic drive (it really should be quite pretty lor..), and then cross the Golden Gate Bridge into Napa and Sonoma Valley, which is the wine-producing region.. you can go wine-tasting there, and probably take a tour of the facilities, where they age the wine, process it, blah blah blah but as for the vineyards themselves, probably nothing to see at this time, cause it's not the season.. I was there in my first summer, and the vines pretty much just look like shriveled little bushes... =P
Actually, your bro should know all the happening places to go to in SF ... since he's spent 4 years there now.. ask him lor..
If you have more time (and, again, can drive there), then you can go to the national parks there.. I think national parks in west coast area are pretty awesome... there's Yosemite (you can climb the famous Half-dome) and Grand Canyon. If you want to go a bit further inland, there's the Joshua Tree Park (hee hee.. Joshua Tree.. ). And there's Yellowstone somewhere, but I'm not exactly sure where.
Then there's Lake Tahoe, which is where most people around there go skiing in the winter, but I think it's supposed to be pretty nice in summer too.. dunno what there is to do there, though...
Ask Wen lah.. what's nice to do around San Diego... (Great America? Is that what it's called? It's some Amusement Park with some really scary thrill-rides... Well.. at least they look scary to me, but then again, I'm a coward... =P)

Yay!!! my exams are finally over! I'm outta school!!! Can't really express how I feel but it's kinda mixed feelings. Time really flies and this semester has been a really nostalgic one, especially towards the end. It's like... everytime I pass by the halls I used to stay in, I get emotional all of a sudden. All the wonderful memories in hall flood me... Well, i guess that's part of moving on. So how's everyone wif their exams? Wenyi, I'm dying to dump u my notes and textbooks, that is, if you wanna take them. Haha...
Looking forward to enter the society but also realise that life will be very different out there. Just can't help but believe that it's harder to make real friends out there. So I'm always reminded abt the need to cherish the friendships we've forged.
Ok, shall not get too soapy here... Anyway, I'll be going to California to visit my brother in end may. Anyone got any recommendations where I should visit over there? Yah... understand that most of u are well travelled by now, with all the overseas studies, exchange and attachments. I'm propbably one of the few left who hasn't travelled further than nepal. So any recommendations?
Hmm.... on a final note, here's wishing those who haven't finished their exams gd luck. Just to add... the feeling in final year is really different!

Other than that, am surviving here but can't say I'm loving life. Work is fine, but am finding it hard staying cheerful when the economic outlook is so uncertain. They fired quite a lot of people last week, including 3 out of the 8 people on my team. Its really depressing to see these 30/ 40 year old men start crying.....and they have kids & wife to support...some of them do. My flatmate lost his job too, and he's either going to continue studying or going back to HK for good. Guess thats life.
But I'll be back in Msia/ Spore for 2 1/2 weeks in Sept....( I dont have that much leave a year

And to HQ, Ruth for coming to our to partake of it with us, and for helping in the great utensil and crockery washup. And to Howie for coming down for the dessert and the Chicken Run re-run. And to Siwei, Marvin and Jason for calling back whilst we were preparing lunch, and bluffing me that they were all back in Singapore.
To everyone else who couldn't make it, there definitely will be a next time. This time, I know where the rice cooker is... so we'll definitely have rice to go along with the dishes.

Hey Jase, finally got time to drop some words here for ya. Before that, hope you've recovered already. Must take good care ok?
Remember one Op Nos at Ubin when we were lying on ponchos at Noordin under the moon, and I asked you, how were you doing at Cornell with the ang mohs. Then we discussed about life there and your relationship with other students. I still remember that I urged you to interact more with the diversity of students there.
Well it may be a regretful thing now that you think you don't know the pple around you very much. But regret is one thing, building regrets upon regrets is another. At least now that you still have one year plus to go, you still have time to prevent further regrets. I guess the last year will be the busiest for you, but try to find some time to interact with your friends. Your F90X is a good tool for that, hehe. Try to get photo-enthusiasts, I realise that they clique very well.
Ok seriously, I'm sure Cornell did imprint some lasting things in you, just that when you're in there, you won't see it. Just like how I didn't really see it when I was in RJ, and now can only regret not having photos to remember all those that happened (remember I very giam one, didn't like to order photos). Some things you'll realise and treasure only after you lose it. So right now, try to cherish the time there as much as possible and spend it fruitfully.
Aha, long time no such cheesy stuffs from me already.
Needa break man.

Hey jason,
glad to hear from you again after so long old friend. haven't heard from the rest at all tho.
About your predicament, are you referring to the singaporeans there or the other students there?
if it's the first, then its not so bad i guess. can catch up back in Singapore.
but if it's the second one, it's prob the same situation with alot of other students overseas, 'cept that cornell is prob a lot more sticky, coz of the high concentration of Singaporeans there.
Sort of like a "Asian" or "Singaporean" or even "Exchange" syndrome.
well, it's one of those "life is only as much as you want to make it out to be" things. You try some, got some risk, maybe u get something big in return.
anyway, you still got 10 weeks jas, can go and jio that ang moh bu that you've always been interested in. don't tell me you never even got interested. i'll be damned.
all is not lost lar yeah?
on the flipside, i've been in NTU and in HALL for like the past 2 years, and to say that i've been involved in life here is kind of an understatement. can't say the same for HQ, but at least for me,
i look back and i wonder whether i'd do it all again and frankly , i'd say no.
sometimes, u dun fit in no matter how hard you try. you can only adapt, pretend to fit in, or think u fit in. but it's still odd for me. i think i'd be much happier if i was in NUS or something. can catch up with the batch 12 pple at NUS.
And being too involved in the mgt side has so many sacrifices. i know alot of people, meet alot of them. but i'm neither close nor distant to them. just sort of accquaintances. and the people that i really want to hang out with, i simply don't have the time for them. that to me is the saddest thing i've had to face since coming to JCRC.
and after i end my term, people will know me yeah, but i've lost alot too. i guess it's more important to do what you think is good for you, and not follow the crowd or listen to others too much.
oh well, make the best of your 10 weeks, i'll be slacking off next year with an invisble presence in hall, and hopefully i get to go on exchange, get out of this stuffy place for a good semester.
take care, take your vitamins, and hope u score pretty soon eh? wink.

Hi all, sorry I MIAed for a long time. I haven't been very healthy this semester. Fell sick twice since the semeseter started and I am getting sick again.
I've been doing lots of reflection lately on how I had spent my last 3 years in Cornell. It is quite sad to realise that I haven't got to know the people around me very well and these people will be graduating in another 10 weeks. There aren't many happy memories that I can speak of. I am guilty of focusing too much on the end that I neglected events that came along the way. But I am not sure if I will do things differently if I had the chance again. I have never regretted going to RJ but I can't say the same for Cornell.
Just some random stuff that is going through my mind right now.

Jer me never thought that I want a date with them either. It's quite silly to win a date just because you answered a silly quiz with the best answers. But yeah, I think Engel looks good.

I'm here, almost dead, with a near-broken spine under the weight of tonnes of projects, and torn muscles from trying to pry myself out. Yvonne, I need a doc, a non-desensitized one, cos I need more emotional help than medical.
Ha, yeah, I've got lots of project to kill this semester. My last semester, how sweet, when it's actually bitter as shit (is shit bitter?). I've been dwelling on this all the time, but this is the one big reason why I can't turn up for gatherings, why I can't participate more in the conv. Just let me graduate!!
Ok which comes to my point: you can help me graduate! Just help me fill up an online questionnaire, it's for my term paper on Human Resource Management. Basically a questionnaire to study the trend of concept of career in today's context. The questionnaire is online, very conveniently, at https://server45.hypermart.net/weikai/cgi-bin/survey1.pl. My target group of respondants are people who have started working for less than 2 years, and people who hold managerial positions. So people like Theresa, Xinyan, etc, please help! If you know people who are managers and above, please help me forward the above address to them too. Thanks! This is crucial to my graduation!
Heh ok on a lighter tone, I'm going Europe for my grad tour. Ard 28 May to 24 June. Will be dropping by London for the last 6 days or so. Possible to meet up with the UK people then? And then after that, I'll be going back to RSAF on 1 July. Sad case.
Has anyone visited the sweet young thing website? http://www.syt.com.sg . I think the idea is crazy, and is prob a gimmick to make short term bucks. That aside, Engel is quite pretty I think. Looks quite sweet yet sultry. Oxymoron?

you know jer, i agree with u, and then some.
desensitization is quite necessary i think in society, well at least some extent.
with all the shit that we have to take, it'd make one go insane if we were so holy as thou all the time.
we're just human, that's all.
doctors might have a shorter end of the stick, with shitty hours and impatient patients and yadaaa.
Break a leg, be detached from all that nonsense.
the key is really to be able to be "not there" yet fully alert and sensitive at the same time.
alot of selective wayang perhaps. with enough practice, you can be fully functional at the more right time.
also, i totally agree with you jer about that wanting to hit someone feeling. it's not that like got plenty of angst or hatred or pent-up frustrations(we have our own ways of release i suppose...) , but sometimes, we feel pretty f***ked that some pple are playing that bo-chup bit on us and we just want to take it their kisser. plenty of legitimate reasons for that man. especially when u start driving. so many chances to be bashful. literally.
but common sense and a good sense of the law does keep us in check. so just go home and wank. JTB,just too bad. no guts no glory hubba.
but i really do agree with you jer. i really do
cheerio!

Don't get desensitized, Yvonne, whatever you do. It makes me upset to meet up with doctors who no longer care for their patients, especially registrars at hospitals who don't care about the patient's well-being, or their family's and just want to get the administrative procedures over and done with, without any care or concern. I wanted to hit them, but perhaps that'd get me in jail or admitted to woodbridge, depending on how good my trial psychiatrist and lawyer are. Sigh. God give our three batch doctors strength...

Pretty depressing to see someone so young have cancer... Wonder if it's cause we're getting older or cause i'm a medical student thus i'm more keen to people's illness, or there really is a rise in cacner rates! there just has been a spate of people around me who has cancer themselves, know people who have cancer, or father, etc have cancer... not sure what to say, what to do either, other than pray for them..... don't even have enough faith to pray for healing cause studying about them makes me see how hard that can be.... all i can pray for is that they'll be comfortable, that they'll know God.... shrug... sometimes talking to some of my patients, it depresses me to hear their story, see them suffering and yet not be able to do anything about it.... recently grandma had a bad infection of her back.... she was in constant pain and agony.... had to be admitted to hospital for months! sometimes i just feel so helpless about it, i don't wanna see her.... mum expects me to be able to do something about it... and when i tell her i can't do anything more than what the doctors can... she doesn't quite understand... shrug... maybe years in hospital will arm me with some protective mechanism of sorts.... maybe it has already to a certain extent to harden my heart towards all the pain and suffering ard..... is it good? bad? necessary? don't have the answers...
doing psychological medicine now, just saw a girl, about our age 21, suppose to be going overseas for further studies when she suddenly went crazy after CNY... no past history etc, now she hears voices, walks ard aimlessly, screams... etc.... makes me think that she could be anyone i know... any of you all... we're supposedly in the susceptible age group of 20s to develop schizophrenia, what she has, scary huh? so well one day when they tell you i'm at woodbridge, don't say i didn't warn you....
oh well.... think it's good that i've so much to study that i don't have much time to ponder on these thoughts huh... just sharing some thoughts..... take care everyone ya? just learnt that traumatic life events permanently rewires your brain... and you're never the same again.... scary huh? guys, making girls cry isn't all that harmless after all huh? right howeyang?

Happy New Year!!! How's everyone's ang pow collection so far? Dunno about u guys, but somehow it doesn't really excite me anymore. I think ultimately it's the thought of visiting your relatives that really matter. HQ's entry was thought provoking. I also had a friend who died of cancer 2 years ago. Though she wasn't a close friend, it just reminds you how precious life is... Well, since it's the festive season, I shall not spoil it by talking about such things. Anyway, just wanna say we should live for the present, not for the past or future. Another thing I learnt is to control your schedule. Sounds easier said than done but just realised many pple get consumed by their schedules that they become a slave to it. I made that mistake too many times but I'm adamant to change now. So stay happy each day, build long lasting relationships and live with passion!

Hey pple... i juz had a helluva week... juz got some stuff to get off my chest. A very close fren of mine was confirmed to have cancer recently. I guess there will never be any escape from pausing to reflect on your life when this sort of thing happens to people close to you. Unfortunately, I've not had the luxury of the time to do it.. until now. Have juz been super-busy with sch work, hall stuff and chronicle (my sch paper)... and now... it all seems so surreal. And I dunno whether to be sad or angry or even disgusted. All week long i've had the consequences of cancer running through my head over and over, frm missing sch, frenz, life to having to find money to pay for all the treatment... and so on. Juz some ramblings frm a 'down-with-flu-HQ'. Live ur life to the fullest k! (or at least try...=P)

hellooo!
Ubin never looked so good to me. Maybe it's because I spent much of the previous times just trying to catch up. Everything was particularly vivid, the sea various
shades of blue and green, the trees looking really pretty. We met at 2+ at Changi Market, stocked up on essentials, left the two who weren't there yet behind, and
took the bumboat across. First stop was Melayu, all fenced up, where we had a nice long rest with GEM Biscuits after having done practically nothing at all. Then,
we embarked towards the famed Chek Jawa. Place is a small rough area of rocks and pale-ish mangroves. Next was to the next-door No.1 Pulau Ubin, or The
House, which is has this really look to it, and creepers all over it, which I was totally surprised to find there. Then we walked onto this long kelong thing, the end of
which was precariously bound together, and which some of us valiantly teetered across and some (the medicine ones) stayed there. Nice
far-from-the-rest-of-the-world place. Then we cycled helter-skelter down rocky slopes to meet haoyang and towards Puaka. On the way, while charging down and
up slopes, we saw a father black boar, his wife, and four kids in tow race across the path after the first two bikes had passed. It was amazing, cos we were cycling
into a "valley" and they were scuttling across the opposite rise so you could really see all the action. And after you see the first, you are so excited to have actually
seen a wild boar, and out of nowhere this tiny version races out and before you can react THREE more follow in rapid succession. Wah! Passed the moors and
various familiar relics. We also passed Puaka, stopped at a.....er.....pavillion where we took photos, and then carried out to the temple quarry where we sat on a
rock and dipped our legs into the clear waters. Here we saw fish of all sizes and species, tortoises and prawns (!!). They had an affinity for HQ's right foot.
Oh and on the road there were two separate encounters with monitor lizards. I never knew they were so huge (2 metres long) and shiny. Oh and we met this mother
dog with a dislocated hip and bony flanks with two puppies who charmed us all quite a bit. So, that was all, I think. We wrapped up with a dinner at Changi Village.

I don't know exactly what the Fateha stand is, but the govt can't just engage and educate. Remember the racial riots/conflict many years back that crippled us considerably? That was a snake bite for us. If it happens again today, the venom will create larger damage than years back when we weren't that established yet. And with the unrest in Indonesia and Malaysia (to a small extent), we are very very vulnerable to such threats. I think that is why the govt has such immediate and harsh reaction to any non-mainstream views, especially when it relates to religion/race. A known irony, Singaporeans listen a lot to their govt. So their govt has got to tell them, that the ideals of Fateha is a threat to our wellbeing and peace, etc, and most people will listen. I know this sounds like some autocracy, but hey, it works, it brings peace to our country, peace that we have enjoyed for many many years.

Hey... just read about the Fateha thing.. I dunno about the issue here. I don't know what exactly his issue is, but the calls to condemn him and isolate him are very disturbing to me. I mean, won't it be creating hotbeds of resentment and anger, while approach might be to engage and educate? I dunno. Joshua says some people just cannot be reasoned with, while I'm more optimistic. After all, the Singapore 21 vision says that every Singaporean matters, and I feel that we should not excommunicate our own citizens just because they do not have mainstream views.

yo howie, yeah I was talking to some of my friend about the terrorists thingy. Again, it felt like another unreal episode, you know that it is something serious and impactful, but cos it hasn't happened to us before, it was hard to imagine it and feel its consequences. A bit like that ubin accident...sorry to have brought it up again. Anyway, 15 of them were caught, but who knows how many more there are out there.....feel like saluting the ISD, and hope they'll work harder!
Coolpix 775, I don't have good impressions of it. Reviews (from professional websites and some friends) reveal that the image quality isn't too good, images are soft and washed out. Of the same range, you might want to consider Canon A20 or Fuji Finepix 2600Z. Price is about the same, sizes are slightly bigger than 775, but image quality is definitely better. Anyway, I think the shutter speed for these cameras max at 1/1500s (of course it doesn't mean that this speed is attainable under all exposure conditions), which is actually good enough to freeze non-stationary subjects. Do you mean shutter lag instead? That the actual snapping time is 1-2s later than when you press the shutter? That's a common drawback of all consumer level digicams. To overcome that, half-press the shutter to lock focus first, then when the moments comes, full press the shutter. Shutter lag is usually the time taken by the camera to determine focus and calculate exposure.
Siwei, yes I mean "unfortunate" guy, hehhehheh

hello pple, clicking away on a HP jornada, a cool little pocket PC device borrowed from school.
amidst all the joyous talk about dancing and finding of male partners, i wonder whether you guys overseas know about the 15 terrorists who tried to bomb yishun mrt last week?
to think that they almost carried out the heinous
deed. and now we have some fateha mouthpiece Zulfikar getting into the news. Singapore gets a little tainted by the usual excesses of culture resulting from development but terrorist bombings are an entirely different matter.
anyway weikai, i've been to your website and it's really quite a good site. and all from your olympus camera. I'm thinking of getting a Nikon coolpix 775 or above, but what do you think about the model?
i handled it before but the shutter speed is terribly slow, cannot capture non stationary objects. otherwise u need very good timing.

Aiyah... weikai, u dunno meh? ballroom must have two people then can dance what... can't do a solo. So I have a better idea, why don't one of you guys go and take up ballroom so that you can dance with me. Better yet, all of you go take up ballroom so I have a bunch of guys to choose from. Hee hee hee... =) As you can see, I'm still on my never-ending crusade to find Singaporean guys who can dance, so that I can continue dancing when I go back home. I'll even give you free basic lessons if you guys want. =P How about that for a starter incentive? I'll teach ballroom during Op Nos. Hehe.. =)
Actually, so far, I *have* met three Singaporean guys (studying overseas) who do ballroom. Though I wonder why they're all so damned short. And the only one who's actually taller than I am (yes.. I kid you not -- the other two are shorter than I am. Well... in heels anyway..) is attached and his gf does ballroom too, so I'm not about to go stir up trouble in that department. =) ah well... =P
I want to read the Lord of the Rings (the only Tolkien book I've read was "The Hobbit"), but I don't want to buy them, and I can't find them in the library, cause it seems like everyone else wants them too. =).

Hihi....
I just got back from Florida, where I spent an entire week dancing -- it was a dancesport festival, and the whole week was packed with workshops and competitions and performances. So now I'm pretty damned tired and my feet are all sore. But it was worth it... I learnt so much from all those professionals, and met a lot of wonderful dancers too. Oh... I met Wong Ju-Min there... dunno if you pple know her -- one year younger than us, and former volleyballer (is there such a word?). She's in Oxford now and dances with this cute guy. =PPP She's pretty good too, except the guy's a lot better than she is. Anyway.... met a few other random Singaporeans too. Always interesting to go overseas to random events and still see Singaporeans around.
Anyway, tsk tsk... Weikai... how can you go around spying on other people like that... invasion of privacy, u noe...
Chunda and Jason, what did you guys do in London... tell us more leh... I want to hear...=)
I still have just under one week before school starts. Not looking forward to going back, I can tell you that..
Oh well... too bad. Anyway.... will write another time. Keep those entries coming in. =)

Hey Penny, you misused that word! At least Vivien corrected you. Oh wait, or was she trying to imply something?
About what I've been doing so far, it's mostly go to school for FYP, and snapping pictures, though I have less time for the latter nowadays already. Anybody interested in going into photography? We can go out for a relaxing shooting session one day...

Hello everybody! Sorry for the late reply, Jason and I got back pretty late on Sunday evening and my school started the next day. Oh well, it's back to another difficult semester but hopefully things will turn out fine. Oh yes, many thanks again to Penny and Christina for kindly putting the two of us up and patiently enduring our cheesy jokes all the way... it was a really memorable two weeks enjoying beautiful cities and catching up with the both of you... =P As for the meal that Jason and I prepared, just remember that what it looks does not equate to what it tastes! And even if it does, it doesn't mean it's healthy! (Think lotsa oyster sauce and thickening starch!)
Well, looking ahead, I'll definitely be back in Singapore by early July so let's all meet up as accordance to time honored traditions and do some crazy things... maybe catch a few convocations of the graduating people, etc... At least I know that I'll be looking forward to the break ahead... that's it for me for now. Take care and write always!
