Rattlesnake Mountain and the Legend of Will Warren's Den

By John Klebes

Join your fellow Pioneer Valley Hiking Club companions as we travel an easy ridge walk along the Connecticut Metacomet Trail. We will have nice views from two clifftops, the bare top of Pinnacle Rock with views in all directions, and the open ledges and vertical cliffs of Rattlesnake Mountain where we can view the Hartford Skyline and points north, east, south. One of the many sights we will explore on our walkabout will be the area of huge boulders that make up Will Warren's Den.

Local legend tells of the day, back in colonial times, when Will Warren was flogged for not going to church in a small town in Connecticut. In a fit of vengeance, Will tried to burn down the entire village of Farmington. The villagers chased him into the nearby hills, where some Indian squaws hid him in a cave near the summit of Rattlesnake Mountain. Thus became the legend of Will Warren's Den. A plaque marks this cave as an historical landmark of the town of Farmington.

During our hike we will pass several other minor views to the west from the many rock outcroppings, as well as an old stone foundation, the channel 30 TV tower, and pass through an interesting tunnel cave-like rock passage. The two peaks of Pinnacle Rock and Rattlesnake Mountain, as well as the many rock outcroppings we will pass, are popular spots for rock climbers. Let's hope the Rattlesnakes stay asleep for the winter.
