We usually go canoe camping which allows
us to carry more than backpackers. We
generally go as a group of 5 people in 3 canoes or up
to 10 or more with 2 in a canoe.
Still weight, bulk and perishability are factors that must
be considered . On short, 2 or 3
day trips, coolers can be used to keep food fresh and even
frozen for awhile. We have found that the dry packaged foods such
as Liptons Pasta and Broccoli in Cheese sauce, Macaroni and Cheese, and
Dry Soup mixes are good bases to which other ingredients can be added to
create a tasty meal. Also pasta is easy to carry and prepare. Adding
a can of tuna, some Olive oil and garlic will create a quick, satisfying
meal for "most" hungry campers. We like to add some form of protein to
our packaged food. This is usually canned; tuna, chicken or in rare
cases Spam. If a package calls for butter we've found that cooking
oil can be substituted. Dry milk is mixed one part dry milk and three
parts water. It is used on dry cereal and in cooking. Pancakes
are easy to prepare with the mixes that only require the addition of water.
Don't forget to pack the syrup. Herbs and spices can add zest to
your camp meals. You will at least need the basics such as; salt, pepper
and sugar. Italian seasoning, hot peppers, garlic powder, chili powder
and soy sauce should be enough to satisfy most palates.
Make sure that you pack everything in waterproof containers. See Canoe/camping Tip # 12 (Medi Jars). Be prepared.
