Day 4 : The Most Historical Part Of The C&O Canal

Although the entire C&O Canal is a historical landmark, I suppose anyone who has traveled its length or read its history will have their favorite places.  I would choose this section from Killiansburg Cave to Calico Rocks, because it goes right near the Antietam  National Battlefield near mile 69 (View Map Below).  Just a few miles further down, the towpath passes through Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (View Map) near mile 61.   We were on a schedule and wanted to complete the trip before the forth of July.  Otherwise, we could easily have spent several days in this area. *

     * Note:  We encountered the roughest section of the towpath to date Between Bald Eagle Island and the Calico Rocks Campsite.  It was ridable, but rocky and very uneven. (view map).
