Day 6 : A Few Notes About
This Trip
If you are
new to riding on the towpath, keep in mind that riding 30 miles on paved
bike paths or city streets cannot be compared to the same distance on the
towpath. It is a bumpy ride in most places and we were very happy
to average 8 miles an hour. We enjoyed very good weather for most
of the trip. I rained only on the 4th night at Calico Rocks and then
a little drizzle the next morning. Traveling from Georgetown to Cumberland
will be a bit more difficult because you will be traveling upriver.
It may seem flat to the eye but you will notice that you are always moving
uphill at the locks. Again, we thank the National
Park Service for keeping the Canal
and towpath open to bikers, and hikers and for maintaining the campsites.
