Potomac River (canoe/camp/fish)
Cottonwood Island (July
1997)
You
won't find Cottenwood island mentioned on any map, but it does exist,
at least for now (river islands often wash away when the Potomac floods).
We have developed a habit of naming a camping area that we like.
If it doesn't already have a name, we give it one, and from that day on
we refer to that area by its new name. As you may have already imagined
there are cottonwoods on this island, and one tree in particular is huge.
The island is one of several in the area large enough to support 6-10 campers.
Directions: Take Rt. 190 N from the Washington
Capital Beltway(I-495). Continue on 190 through Potomac Md. to Violettes
Lock Rd. Proceed to Parking area.
