'Mr. Quality Scouting'

Scouter Max Edralin Jr. surveyed with satisfaction the site of the most awaited Jamboree of all. His critical eyes darted from  one sub-camp to another, thinking of a possible lead that could come out in the press the following day. He is the deputy camp chieffor promotions and publicity and participation.

Then he went on to write down the announcement about the Jamboree, satisfied and full of confidence that the scouts in this Jamboree belong to those who have not only complete knowledge about Scouting, but those who know how to apply what they have learned from the Movement.

        What is Quality Scouting ?

Sir Max, honed by Scouting skills he learned in the '40s, says that in order to attain quality Scouting, Scouts should first internalize the Scout Oath and Law, he he believes that if one were to practice what he is being taught about, he should know by heart every Scout in his manifold activities.

" On my honor, I will do my best..."

This is the first line of the Scout Oath. Once, a Scout recited this vow and raised his hand, he should know that he is giving his promise to carry out.

        " A Scout is trustworthy..."

This is the first point of The Scout Law. A Scout should not only know the proper order of the 12 points of the Scout Law; he should also know how to apply it.That according to Sir Max,is quality scouting.

Next ,a Scout should acquire necessary skills through  the rudiments of the Merit Badge System.

"It could save your life," he says. And it did to him.

"If not for what I have learned from Scouting,I may not be here joining the Jamboree," he says.

          His story:

"It was the  '60s and I was a reporter .Iwas assigned to join a search party  to llok for a plane that crashed in Mindoro.I was with two photographers when we opted to stay behind after days of braving the jungle because we could not walk any more."

"Two days and two nights of restless journey took its toll on our energies."

"The problem started when we lost our trail. But I remembered that there was helicopter air dropping supplies to the advanced parties. So,we waited until I saw a chopper loom into view.As it moved in our direction I saw a chopper loom into view.As it moved into our direction I frantically waved two white handkerchiefs to signal 'SOS' the  semaphore way, then the chopper came down to pick us up. Thanks to the Scouting skills I learned, some 20 years before."

Next in the list, according to him is civic work. A Scout should spend time to community service.

Scouting is giving help when necessary to people in need. There are many ways by which a Scout could prove his worth as true member of the Movement. Community related projects such as tree planting, cleanliness drive and information campaign are few of the many activities which he could indulge himself in.
