Murray River - Echuca/Moama |
Overview - The Murray
River is part of Australia's biggest inland river system. There are
ample bank fishing opportunities to be had on the Murray, as well as great
access for small boat fishing. A short trip down or upstream from
the main port area can produce great results especially fishing in and
out of the snags. Grubs are dynamite on big Murray Cod, I was once
heard someone mention on a chat board that you can't beat bardi grubs lightly
doused in CRC and I quote that. I don't know if it works because
I have never tried it, but in the world of fishing trying something new
is always worth a go. Another good bait for Cod is the humble yabby
that can be found in abundance in the Murray, remember only take what you
need! The yabby also works wonders on Golden Perch which can reach
good sizes in the Murray. For a good all round bait I suggest you
stick with your basic garden worms and you might surprise yourself.
Something the Murray unfortunately is very well known for is its abundant
supply of European Carp. Nearly every trip to the Murray I run into
one of these pests of nature, I seem to find them especially prominent
on warmer days. My personal view on Carp is to make the most of a
bad situation, they are there now and there's not much we can do about
until someone comes up with a bright idea on how to eradicate them.
In the mean time Carp are a great species to target when fishing with youngsters.
A simple running sinker rig baited with bread, dough or worms will nearly
guarantee you a catch up in the Murray. Catching a fish or
leaving empty handed might be the difference between a young angler being
hooked for life or for turning to golf.
The Murray is also famous for the huge number of water skiers and water craft it attracts, when fishing these can be very annoying so try to chose a quiet spot or go fishing in times when they are not around. I haven't forgot lure fisherman I was just leaving the best to last. The "stump jumper" and similar lures always perform well so they would probably be your best bet especially on Cod and Golden perch. Try to find a day when the sun is out as the water in the Murray is very murky so the clearer the water and the clearer the weather the better chance you have of nailing that trophy fish. Types of Fish - Murray Cod - Golden Perch - European Carp - English Perch (Redfin) Background - Echuca/Moama was in its day Australia's largest inland port servicing all of the Riverina district. Today Echuca/Moama is a thriving district offering all the services of a big city town with the atmosphere of Australias counrty towns are famous for. The Port has been fully restored along with Paddle steamers that charmed the Murray all those years ago, scenic rides are available on the majestic Paddle Steamers up and down the Mighty Murray. Echuca/Moama has many many other opportunities to offer so I suggest you go check it out yourself.
