A page out of our history Febuary `97 marked the 87th birthday of the Boy Scouts of America, ,and also Troop 20, the "oldest Boy Scout Troop in America" The U.S. Congress incorperated the Boy scouts of America in Febuary of 1910, and gave out Charters throughout the country for the formation of troops . But , one month prior to this congressional action, a Troop was formed at the New Utrecht Reformed Church in Brooklyn,N.Y. Although the Troop did not recieve it`s Charter until March , the founding date stated on the Charter is "January,1910".. Ever since then the Scouts at Troop 20 have been serving their local community and nation ; in WW1 the Troop collected scrap metal and helped sellWar Bonds . Many of the Scouts served in WW2, and among these young men were Scoutmaster William Jordan and asst. Scoutmaster Vincent Pittalla , who died fighting for their country . Those who remained behind were engaged in Civil Defense . In their concern for good citizenship Troop 20 has been involved in the get out and vote campaign; and they strive to promote conservation. Fifteen of the Scouts in Troop 20 have attained the highest award in Scouting , the EAGLE rank. The Troop is also the first non Catholic sponsered troop to recieve the Pope Paul the VI national unit award , in 1976 and again in 1994. Our most recent special event was when the City of New York gave a special Proclamation to our current Scoutmaster , Mr Robert Buonvino, which reads as follows ; Be it known: That the Council of the City of New York Commends "BOY SCOUT TROOP 20" The oldest Troop in the United States of America, on 85 years of outstanding achievement Signed on this 26th day of March in the year Nineteen hundred and Ninety five. Signed ,Peter F. Vallone, Speaker for the entire council. E-Mail your Comments or questions Troop20bsa-ny@oocities.com For information call 718-234-9268 Or fill out our Registration Form
