Cheeseboro Canyon park is located by taking the 101 Freeway (Ventura Fry) to the Chesebro exit. Head north from the exit (away from the ocean) and take immediate right on Chesebro Road. Follow the road about a mile to the park entrance on your right. The park is very popular during the weekends. Get here before 7:00 or in the afternoon to assure yourself parking. Remember in the summer this place can be very hot and dry so bring plenty of water. There is no water in the park. Make sure you dosed yourself with sunscreen in the summer. I enjoy riding here. Its close to my home and the rides are challenging and fun. I will tell you two of my favorite rides that will take you to parts of the park not frequently visited by the general masses. Ist Ride "Topo map of the ride" Distance: about 14 miles Terrain: fireroad Time allowed: 2.5-3.25 hours Elevation Gain: about 1000' Difficulty: Moderate, nontechnical "on the trail" Summary: This is a good ride to check out your endurance. If you can do this ride without walking up any of the hills, then you can do all my favorite rides. I take two ten minute rest breaks during the ride. This ride goes up and down several nice little hills. Well here is the ride. We start on the main trail. Take a right a couple miles up to the Baleen Wall trail. Now get in your climbing mode. We inch our way up the first hill and then we get to the 2nd hill. This one is the steepest of them all. Its short but the footing is not the greatest. Get in the lowest or second to lowest ,gather all your strength and dig in . Don't give up. If you can do this one. You can do the rest of the ride without to much trouble. If you have trouble here. Go back to the gym and start working out on the life-cycle until you get to level 9 going up the hills for 21 minutes. There are two more up and down hills that are not as steep as the last one. At about 4 miles there is a nice place to rest at the crest of the last hill. Enjoy the view. You climb one more hill like the others. Descend a nice downhill and reach a four way junction at about 5 miles.Take the left junction. Here is the only part were there is single tract for about .25 miles. Its a little tricky here depending on weather conditions. In the winter it can be muddy or rutted up. If you are not confortable riding this stretch . Walk your bike. At about 5.25 miles we arrive at the sheep corral junction. The path to the left is the Sulfur Springs Trail leading back to home in about 4.5 down hill miles. We take the path to the right and continue straight. Well I lied. This is single tract. We will be riding it for the next couple of miles. There is a couple of spots where you have to dismount because of the technicality of the trail. Besides those two spots the rest of the single tract is rideable. Put on your climbing boots because we are heading into one of the most remote parts of the park. We climb two nice little hills.Take a nice rest break at around mile 7. You will see a good spot right before descending to the Pallo Camado fireroad. Enjoy the view of Pallo Commado Canyon. Take a left at the fire road and enjoy 3 miles of basically downhill down the canyon until you reach the gate. If you are totally fried, throw your bike over the gate and ride your bike one mile to the entrance of the park. If not again get in the climbing mode because you got three more hills to go. The first one is a killer. Its not that steep. I don't know maybe the footing is not the greatest but I have trouble with it. By the time I reach the bottom of the hill and onto the main drag where you go right I am pretty tired. This should be mile 12 at the junction of the Baleen and canyon trail. Just two more easy miles bring you back to the start.
