1. Start at Alpine Valley Ski building, located at Mayfield Rd. (Rt. 322) and Fowler's Mill Rd., in Munson Twp. A small tributary of the Chagrin River is running through the property. If you don't want to park on that property, right on the corner are a group of small shops, and a large graveled parking lot. (41 degrees, 31 minutes, 45 seconds latitude, 81 degrees, 15 minutes, 22 seconds longitude)
2. Stand to the right of all the buildings on Alpine Ski hill, and face uphill. Head 320 degrees NW uphill through the field to where the tree line starts; it is 850 ft. to the corner where several small trees are at the trail entrance. ***
3. Follow the washout as a handrail uphill at 307 degrees WNW; the trail is over large boulders embedded into the soil. +++
4. About 800 ft. uphill the trail leaves the washout; a split in the trail near the top of the washout goes to houses at the end of Carroll Rd., off of Sherman Rd.
5. Continue slight uphill grade on trail, 280 degrees WNW through the woods.
6. Notice the edge of a large open field to the N at 600 ft. past the split; the edge of a much older overgrown field, probably 50 years or so of growth, is marked by a group of plowed field stones, piled up into an ancient wall, and an old metal gate, about 30 ft. off the trail to the N. ***
7. Continue 270 degrees W along the trail, with the field to the N.
8. The other edge of the open field, where the tree line starts again, is very close to the highest elevation of 'Rattlesnake Hill' (the turn-of-the-century name of the hill you just climbed), at 1,341.5 ft. above sea level.
9. The trail starts to go slightly downhill from here.
10. 200 ft. past the corner/edge of the field, the trail splits again at a large oak tree, which is marked with a blue paint spot. The trail to your left at 250 degrees WSW goes to other sandstone formations and ledges; the trail to your right at 280 degrees WNW goes to Sherman Cave; this is the trail you follow. ***
11. Follow the well established trail at 290 - 300 degrees WNW for 800 ft; the trail is still on a downhill grade. You will pass through a saddle which is the headwater for a small stream that runs through the other ledges. ###
12. The trail still maintains a downhill grade at 250 degrees WSW; a re-entrant will be seen parallel to your left for about 500 ft.; use it as a handrail. +++
13. The trail then heads 310 degrees NW, and will flatten out.
14. In 1000 ft. the trail heads 340 degrees NNW and will lead into another gulley or re-entrant, """ which is the headwater for the stream that flows into the ledges and Sherman Cave. ***
15. Cross the re-entrant at 270 degrees W; the trail goes slightly uphill and then will level off; from the re-entrant to where you must leave the trail is about 400 ft.
16. At that 400 ft. distance, head 180 degrees S off the trail through the woods, and in 100 ft. the begining of the ledges and formations will be seen;
climb down into the cliff washout and follow it all the way to the cave. The stream will pour into the cave at a small opening, which is about half way to the floor of the cave. You'll know it when you see it. (41 degrees, 32 minutes latitude, 81 degrees 16 minutes, 38 seconds longitude)
