2000 U.S. Marathon Team Trials , National & World Championships

Marathon Team Trials:

Team Selection Trials for the U.S. Senior and Junior Marathon Teams will be hosted by the Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club in Gainesville, GA April 29 - 30, 2000.

These Trials will select the U.S. Marathon National Team and its International Competition Team who will be eligible to represent the U.S. at Marathon World Cup events and at the ICF Marathon World Championships that will be held in Dartmouth, NS Canada September 1 - 3, 2000. This event will be great fun! The Marathon Committee will encourage some of the big names in U.S. paddling to try out for the teams!

General Details:

    1. The maximum Senior and Junior National Team sizes will respectively consist of up to 12 men (kayak), 12 women (kayak), and 12 men (Canoe).
    2. For this selection process anyone 18 years or under in the year of the selection will be eligible for Junior National Team status however only juniors 15-18 will be eligible for the Junior International Competition Team. The first year a junior competitor can compete in international competition is the year in which his/her l5th birthday falls, and the last year he/ she may compete as a junior is the year in which his/her l8th birthday falls.
    3. The maximum Senior International Competition Team size selected will be two M K1, two W K-1, two M K2, two W K2, two M C1, two M C2.
    4. The maximum Junior International Competition Team size selected will two M K1, two W K-1, two M K2, two W K2, two M C1, two M C2.
    5. Final details on the National and International Competition Team(s) selection criteria will be disseminated in January or early February of 2000. In 1999, team qualification was based on results in the solo classes and the differential between the fastest solo paddler in each class and successive finishers. Qualifications standards may change for the 2000 International Competition Team(s) but the standards WILL include a minimum threshold to ensure that qualifying team members will be competitive in ICF sanctioned international events.

Funding:

A nominal amount of funding will be available for travel and other team expenditures. An estimate of the Team budget will be announced along with final team selection criteria.

Marathon National Championships:

Marathon National Championships for ICF class boats will be held in Aug. 11-13, 2000 in conjunction with USCA nationals in Lafayette, Indiana.

Unfilled positions on the National and International Competition Team(s) MAY be filled at the Marathon National Championships. A final determination on this policy will be announced in January –February 2000.

World Championship Events (Senior, Junior and Masters):

Senior and Junior World Championships that will be held in Dartmouth, NS, Canada September 1 – 3, 2000. Separate Masters Cup races will also be contested in Dartmouth on Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, 2000!

The event will be a Masters’ World Cup competition. Both "Pro-Boat" and ICF boats will be raced over a 21-km. course. Two 600-m. portages along a woodland trail will be included. In 1999, the Masters’ World Cup in Hungary attracted over 200 entries from "veteran" age paddlers.

Masters are invited to enter in 5-year age groupings starting at 30. Male and Female categories will be open, in both Canadian canoe and kayak; singles and doubles. Yes, that is right! For the first time, Female C-1 and C-2 ICF paddlers will race in an international event..

There will be no need to actually qualify for the Masters’ World Cup entries. Masters’ races at the Worlds are open to all paddlers who pre-register and are accredited (details to follow).
