Marathon Team Questions and Answers

Question: Hi Lee, I have a question about what is happening with the marathon workshop/training camp we discussed at trials. I think there are many of us that would really benefit from learning the skills that take minutes off our times. Ty Hagler

Answer: The scheduled training camp was the week prior to Trials at LCKC. Another opportunity would be the week prior to USCA/ICF Marathon Nationals in Lafayette, IN. The problem there for at least ½ of the team is the conflict with Sprint Nationals. Contact Roger Myers, Team Leader with any ideas on when and where to schedule a camp.

<Question: What about Team Uniforms?

Answer: We may work through USACK but we are shopping for either a sponsor or a good deal. The good news is that the Canadian hosts are pretty relaxed on uniform requirements. If anyone can help on getting uniforms, please contact Roger or Lee ASAP

Question: How does a Senior or Junior who is qualified for World Championship competition enter the the World Championships or Junior World Cup?

Answer: Stay in touch with Team Leader Roger Myers at 927-9204 or kingkayak@netzero.net. Only Roger may submit official entries to Worlds which must also be certified by USA Canoe/Kayak. Additionally, Juniors should declare their intentions to Tony Hall who will work with Roger on Junior Team matters.

Question: Do Seniors and Juniors need to be USACK and/or ACA members to be accredited at Worlds? ?

Answer: Don't have a definitive answer yet. We'll post the answer immediately when we have it. USACK is the national federation that the ICF looks to for entries and accrediation. ACA still manages the Marathon Committee and has allocated $3,000 for team expenses. At a minimum, good manners would indicate a need for ACA membership.

Question: How do Seniors who did not qualify for Worlds at the Trials qualify during the summer?

Answer: Talk to Roger Myers or any other selection committee member Lee Deviney, Abel Hastings or Rob Hartman. Rather than set a distance/time standards, paddlers are invited to either run the Lanier course again (for example W K-1 20K at 2 hrs. or less incl. portages) OR attend the Canadian Team Trials June 18 and submit a qualifying time OR race at USCA/ICF Marathon Nationals Aug 11-13 in the appropriate ICF class.

The bottom line is that to qualify for Worlds the paddler should be able to demonstrate an ability to complete a World Championship race at a pace no slower than 10 minutes behind the second to last boat at previous World Championships. Roger can calculate that pace for any boat class.

Nominal entries for Worlds will be submitted no later than Aug. 19, 2000.

Question: Thank you Lee for keeping me posted. As a Master's competitor will I be required to "requalify" at Lanier and/or on August 11th? I am a little unsure of my status as I did not paddle a K1 etc... Thank you for all you and Roger are doing in your personal time. Melissa McDonagh

Answer: Melissa was in fact in a legitimate K-1 trainer so there is no boat issue. As a master, there is no need to "re-qualify" to enter the Masters World Cup. All any master has to do is register with the Canoe To The Sea 2000 Accreditation Desk see World Masters Cup website http://www.canoe2000.ns.ca/

Question: What is the minimum age for Masters?

Answer: Age groups will start at 30 years of age, for male and female, and continue in 5-year increments.

Question: How does a master enter the Masters Cup?

Answer: Masters can self-enter on the Canadian Canoe Association website: http://www.canoe2000.ns.ca/

Question: Who is responsible for organizing the Masters Group for Masters World Cup?

Answer:You are responsible for yourself. Roger will take no responsibility for assisting masters as he'll have his hands full with the Seniors. However, Bruce Gipson (aka south afro paddler) VENT929@aol.com has volunteered to assist in organizing masters. Danny Broadhurst (aka portage king) DBDANDDGG@aol.com has also worked on this and may have identified the "go to " person. Their messages follow.

From Bruce"Lee, I registered online at the Marathon website to compete and never got a reply or confirmation. Also I requested a list of hotel/motel accomodation and never received a reply. I am going to call them next and see what I can get. I know Danny and will let him know what I find out. If you can let me know the status of registering for the Masters it would be appreciated. Thanks --Bruce"

From Danny 6/6/00: Lee, For accomodations at Nova scotia the organiser is Heidi MacKinnon e-m addressis <<<< pclass@accesswave.ca>>>>> She is incredibly efficient and sorted mine and Mellissa's accomodations out in one day and I'd been at it since Feb with " the official people!"

Question: What about travel planning and expenses?

Answer: Roger is working on details for the Senior Team and will ask for Tony's assistance on juniors. Lee is working with ACA on budget matters. We have approximately $3,000 to work worth TOTAL so we'll try to get the most bang for the buck and allocate fairly...most likely the budget will go for lodging and ground transport. Masters are on their own budget wise.
