There are only three basic types of backpacks, with a wide variety of styles available within the types.
- Daypack - This kind of pack essentially holds everything you might need for a one-day outing. The size you choose should be based on how much 'extra' stuff you take along. Some full-sized backpacks come with a detachable section that can be used for day hiking separate from the main pack, and is a more economical solution as long as you intend to go on more lengthly hiking trips.
- External Frame - This kind holds more than a daypack. Typical external frame packs have a type of vinyl canvas material 'bag' attached to a lightweight metal frame, similar to the military style backpacks you might find in an Army/Navy surplus store. This kind is more than adequate for younger age groups, but may require modification to fit a smaller framed person. There are a wide variety of sizes available. You might find inexpensive brands at places like K-Mart or Wal-Mart (or any other department store) or try looking at a specialty store, like Blue Ridge Mountain Sports or Wild River Outfitters (they give 10% discounts to Royal Rangers, you have to ask).
- Internal Frame - This kind usually holds more than an external frame, and tends to be more comfortable, and easier to adjust for body size. Internal frame packs have an internal structure to support the pack, with minimal space taken up by metal frames. They are a more efficient pack in that there is more room inside (and generally outside too) for your gear.
