Day 1

cemetary

We began our trip in Helsinki by taking the overnight train to Rovaniemi, which is situated on the Artic circle. We had a short early morning break here and walked the kinks out of our body. During the walk we stoped by the cemetary of the church and watched the birds flit around in the early morning breeze.

From Rovaniemi we took a bus four hours north to Hetta. This is the northernmost part of our trip. From Hetta we had to hire a boat (40 FIM) to cross Lake Ounasjarvi.

When we were on the other side, we saw a sea plane fly over and land on the Hetta side of the lake. This would be our last look at civilization for three whole days.

Once on the other side of the lake we were in the Lapland Wilderness. It was already getting late in the day to we started at once towards the wilderness hut that would be our camp for the night. As you can see, we bravely navigated our way through the "wilderness." :)

Once we arrived we immediately started a fire and began to prepare supper, which would be our first warm meal in 36 hours. Here you can see our cook busy at work on his traditional camping meal, spaghetti.
