Mom Johnson's Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
from 1947
1 cup shortening
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups sifted flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda dissolved in 2 teaspoons hot water
3 cups oatmeal
1 package (6 ounces) chocolate chips
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup chopped walnuts
Cream together Shortening, sugar and eggs to make batter.
Sift together the flour and salt then stir into batter. Add in the baking soda and water mixure while stirring.
Stir in the chocolate chips, nuts, vanilla and oatmeal. Drop by teaspoon onto greased cookie sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees F, for ruffly 12 minutes, or until golden brown.
Yields 5 dozen cookies.
