Report=Anchored up in my favorite spot about 8:00 pm and caught several bass and a jacksmelt by 9 pm when my friend John hooks into a big bat ray. We fought the thing for about 40 mins. but it did not want to come to the boat with #30 pound test so we had to pull up the anchors and chase him. We caught up with him in the middle of the bay and John says he wants to keep him for eating. So I stuck a gaff in his head but the monster lunged backwards and pulled the gaff hook straight!! That pissed him off and he took another huge run. So I bent the hook back and made another attempt but this time I waited until he was closer to the surface so I could lift his head out of the water and imobilize him. It was too big to pull up with the gaff so I had John take the gaff and I stuck my fingers in his gill sockets and with the help of John, pulled him over the side. The fish took up the whole bow of the boat. I estimate it to be around 100 pounds. With the big stingray taking up most of our fishing space, we decided to head in early. Another awesome night. My secret bat ray hole produces again! I am curious to see how tasty John finds the bat ray to be. I have heard some people say they taste like scallops but personally I don't think I could eat such an ugly looking fish.
