Report=Was invited to go fishing at Catalina Island today and although I already had plans to go to San Diego tomorrow, I just couldn't pass up the chance at a big white seabass. We headed out at 4 am and found rough seas, but we decided to take the beating and make the trip over. We got to the backside around 6 and anchored up but really didn't have to - not much current. By 8 am the current was slack but we did manage to put a nice 6-pound calico in the hold. We moved over to the Salte Verde area where I soaked a squid on the bottom while we drifted. Suddenly my rod gets hit. I picked it up and set the hook. The fish takes off on a gnarly run! For the next 5-10 minutes the battle is on with visions of a big white seabass dancing in my head. I get the fish up to the surface and what is it? A 20-pound bat ray, oh what a heart-breaker. We then moved over to the east end and picked up a few 'cudas on the troll. We got to the Avalon area, where several party boats were working the area, picking off barracuda. I flylined the live squid in hopes of a stray yellow but picked up nothing but a few more cudas. We headed in about 2 pm and hit a secret halibut hole in LA harbor for one shorty. Many thanks to capt. Dan who invited me and a friend to fish with him on his very nice boat. I also got to fish with Mark from the Chark bait site, a very nice guy who loaned me one of his lures to troll with. (which I happened to land a nice 'cuda on).
