Report: Q: What makes a man get up at 1 a.m., drive 120 miles, ride on a boat for 120 miles, and then drive back home all beat-up, burnt, salty and smelly?

A: AAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLBBBBBBBBBBEEEEEEEEEEECCCCCCCCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nice fat ones too!! What a great way to start the season. I was invited to fish with Jason aboard his boat "Sea Shepard" (to be re-named soon). I got a late fri. night sat. image (which will be a new feature on the Salt page) I noticed a very good temp. break just past the 302 so we headed on a 222 out of S.D. for about 25 miles and then trolled south. After about an hour, wham!! hookup. A single jig strike. Jason kept the throttle down for about 10 sec. but no other jigs got bit. By now I've got a bait pinned and in the water. After a fes seconds, wham! I get bit. then another bait fish, Triple Hookup!!! One of the bait fish came unbuttoned but we gaffed the troll fish while I battled my albie on #25 test. This was a tough fish and he definately wanted to get back with his friends and not on the boat. I finally got him up though, but not in time for other boats in the area to notice that we were stopped. The area was soon closed in with 4 other boats. We trolled around the numbers for a while but could not raise anything else. Jason decides to hit the rockpile for yellowtail. We find a decent bite but most of our bait is weak or dead by now, so getting bit was tough. We finished trolling around south of South Island to see if we could get something to jump on the Rapalas but not. Called it a "Good" day and headed in but because this was my first albie of the year, it gets an "Excellent" rating. Mucho thanks to skipper Jason for inviting us to fish with him on his very nice boat.

Rating: Excellent
