I have named this page "Mount Ritter"
because climbing this namesake mountain is one of the nicest 3d class
climbs I have ever done. This peak is located in the Sierra Nevada mountains about midway
between the town of Mammoth Lakes and Yosemite National Park. This mountain also makes for
a really nice Springtime ski run, that is if you don't mind the climb to get to the top.
Once at the summit of Mount Ritter, at 13,157 feet A.S.L., one should lay back on one of
the rocks and absorb the view of "God's Country", as John Muir once did. I got an interesting e-mail from a guy named Alan Ritter who describes trips he and some friends took to climb the mountain that bears his name, in June 1996, July 1997, and July 1998. Alan did a very nice job, and took some dynamite photographs! Here is another page done by Alan. I think you will enjoy his stories. I admired the works of a photographer named Jim Stroup who put together a nice photograph page of the area nearby Mount Ritter. Over the web I met a nice person who went to my highschool (Santa Monica, CA) and lives in Long Valley (just outside Mammoth). Mel' is into Llama packing and has an excellent web page on backcountry cooking. Another acquaintance over the web, Bob Parsons also has some nice photographs and links in his John Muir Trail Picture Show.
I spent my second childhood in the Sierra Nevada; I say this because that was the most care-free feeling I have ever experienced since my young childhood. Since moving away I don't think a day goes by where my thoughts wander back to those wonderful days. "Time just seems to stand still when you are in the Sierra Nevada mountains." - Me! I lived in the town of Mammoth Lakes from 1973 through 1979. People tell me I left at a good time, because it started to get really crowded and built up after I left. I worked on various construction jobs, as a ski patrolman for Mammoth Mountain, and at a backcountry pack station. In the Summer I would explore all of what there was to explore, and do a lot of bicycle riding around the Sierras. In the Winter I would enjoy cross-country skiing and ski camping when I was not working. Click on any thumbnail photo for a closer look Mono Lake:
