Movie: Final Destination
Director: James Wong
Starring: Devon Sawa, Seann W Scott, Ali Larter, Kerr Smith, Chad E Donella
What it's about: A teenager, on a trip to France with his classmates, has a premonition that the plan will explode after takeoff. While trying to warn his friends he and six others get thrown off the plane. After the plane takes off with the rest of the class, it explodes in mid air just as he predicted. Then the survivors begin to die off in mysterious accidents.
What I thought: Well what I thought before the movie and after the movie were two completely different things. I was expecting the usual teeny-popper type film where there's lots of sex and the deaths and you know who's gonna die and exactly how it's gonna happen. Well except for the sex I got exactly what I expected there. But what I didn't expect was the method and how tense some of the deaths were.

Even though my friend and I pretty much predicted how everyone was gonna die (I mean when they show you every instrument used in the death scene it's kind of obvious.) it was still neat to see. The only one that threw us for a loop was the Teachers death scene. That one was perhaps the most complex, convoluted and gory in the entire film and pretty much of any teen horror flick I've seen to date. But MAN was it cool.

What really impressed me this time was that it just wasn't random killing of a homicidal maniac but there was a definite pattern to the deaths. Can't tell you that either because it would take away a HUGE part of the film but it was a really great concept.

What I didn't like was the first death of one of the survivors. It involved a leaky toilet. Let me explain. This guy is shaving in his bathroom and it cuts to the toilet, which mysteriously begins to leak around the seal. The water runs towards his bare feet on the tile floor. You know what's gonna happen next right. That's right, he finishes shaving and takes a step away from the sink. He slips on the water, falls towards the tub and reaches out to stop himself. In his tub/shower there is a hotel style clothesline (one of those cord things that attaches to the wall in your shower) which he rips off the wall as he falls. The cord get wrapped around his neck, he falls completely into the tub and because his beet are wet and covered in toilet bowl cleaner, he can't get a grip to stand up. Thus he strangles himself to death. That would have been fine except that the water in the tub begins to flow back into the toilet, leaving the floor completely dry by the way, and now makes it look like he couldn't take the fact that his classmates died and he didn't so he killed himself. The water going back into the bathroom was the stupid part.

But perhaps the best part was the end of the movie. Not gonna tell you what happens in it but WOW! It was my entire friend and I could talk about after the movie was over.

So why the rating? Well I loved the movie pretty much from the beginning, it was really slow to start at first and didn't explain things all that well but when the action started, man it was cool. I gave it a high rating because it was a really well done teeny-horror flick. Compared to other movies I have seen it was not that great but compared to stuff like Nightmare on Elm Street it was awesome.
