| Movie: | Mission: Impossible 2 |
| Director: | John Woo |
| Starring: | Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Thandie Newton, Dougray Scott, Rade Serbedzija |
| What it's about: | IMF agent Ethan Hunt is sent on a mission that will save the world. Ethan must find a terrorist that has stolen the only vial of vaccination for a new type of virus that if left in the victim's body for more than 20 hours, is incurable. Before he goes on the mission, he must first recruit a lady thief who once had a relationship with the terrorist. |
| What I thought: | John Woo has done it again. I must admit that the action and use of slow motion was amazing and Tom Cruise really did a good job as James Bond. Yes, I said James Bond. Because other than the title and theme music, this was nothing more than a glorified 007 movie.
Mission: Impossible is not about killing the bad guys blowing up everything in sight, and romancing the beautiful girl, it's about using subterfuge, misdirection and disguises to get into the bad guys organization, use high tech and ultra secret tools to accomplish the mission, and get out before the bad guys even know you're there. James Bond on the other hand uses, guns, bombs, cars, pens and whatever else he can get his hands on to kill whoever tries to stop him (he does have a license for it ya know), sleep with any woman (other than M *shudder*) within a 600 mile radius, and walk out of whatever hole he blew in whatever wall without so much as wrinkling his tux. The story line in this movie was weaker than my camp coffee and though he IS the star of the movie, there was too much focus on Tom's character and his romance with the girl. But other than that it was great. The action was amazing. Tom Cruise did some incredible stunts and deserves some huge credit for that. I can't believe some of the fight scenes he did and some of the moves in those scenes. And the music was excellent too. I'm still flabbergasted that Limp Bizket did the theme song for the movie. They did a great job of it. And this from a guy that doesn't think too much of the band in the first place. So why the low rating? Well special effects and cool stunts are great in any movie, but I also want something that'll keep my interest for more than 30 seconds while watching a movie. Man cannot exist on action alone (though it DOES make for a good dietary supplement) and needs substance between the fights and explosions. The writers needed to have a bit more story in the movie than that. But hey, let's face it, anything at 3 or above is an AMAZING John Woo movie. I just can't wait until he starts doing the James Bond films. |
