Movie: Space Cowboys

Director: Henry Bumstead, Clint Eastwood and Jack N. Green

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, James Garner, Donald Sutherland, Marcia Gay Harden

What it's about: Four Air Force pilots are passed over in the 60 to be the first Americans in space. Years later they are asked by NASA to back into space to repair an old Russian communications satellite that is in a decaying orbit and threatening the earth.

What I thought: I thought the movie was actually pretty cool. Clint, Tommy, Garner, and Donald all played their roles really well.
I did find that the movie was a little along the lines of Full Metal Jacket in it's style. The first half of the movie was the astronauts getting trained and prepared for their mission and the second half was them actually performing the mission.
There were a few scenes that we knew where it was leading or we knew what was going to happen, but it also had a few really funny parts with the competition between the Space Cowboys and the younger astronauts and the competition between Clint and Tommy's character. It was like they were actually competing with each other in real life and it just carried over to the big screen.
Garner played the "scaredy cat" in the movie and his role wasn't that big but he did a really good job in it. Sutherland on the other hand was perhaps the funniest of them all. He played the womanizer to the hilt. Not sure if he was really acting or not. Of course he usually does a good job with whatever role he's given.
So why the rating? I like the movie but it wasn't spectacular. I went in not expecting too much and wasn't disappointed. It reminded me of Armageddon in a way with the events that happen at the end of the mission but it was still funny when it was supposed to be but not all that scary or intense when it should/could have been. And the whole secret of the Soviet satellite wasn't that big of a surprise but that just may be because I'm a Cold War Baby.
