A Seasonal Lake

Near Bourget Ontario, a small creek becomes a lake every spring for a short period of time. This area is part of the same ancient riverbed as Mer Bleue and the Alfred Bog. Tens of thousands of Canada Geese arrive in this area about the same time. As many as a thousand pintail ducks were seen in this area in the spring of 1998.

This area floods in an extreme way during the spring melt because there is a wide expanse of low-lying fields underlaid with clay. Some secondary roads become unusable for a short period of time, but generally people in the area have adapted.

In the same area, when it's not flooded, there is a salt spring which is a residual effect of the ancient Champlain Sea which formerly occupied much of the current Ottawa River valley basin. Some unique plants can be found in the area of this spring.

Plaisance

North and slightly east of this area, across the Ottawa River, is the Plaisance Nature Reserve. This area is also visited by large numbers of Canada geese.
