Not Quite So Harsh

A fen is a wetland similar to a bog but with more water flow. So, it is less acidic, plants have more nutrients and the water is less stagnant. Fens still contain peat, but also have some sedges, like a swamp. Some trees which tolerate damp surroundings may be found at the edges of a fen. Like bogs, fens tend to occur in cooler climates.

It may take thousands of years for a fen to form. Like other wetlands, this type of habitat is disappearing from some regions at an alarming rate.
