Troop Scouters Annual Report - 1999

SCOUTERS

1999 has seen the troop consolidate and continue to grow in skills and strength.

We welcome Panther (Simon Lamprey) and Buf (Walter Duncan) to the troop as Assistant Troop Scouters, as well as Chris Biljoen as a helper. We hope that they have a long and fulfilling stay with the troop.

We know that Panther will be around for awhile (another 18yrs) as Baby Panther arrived earlier in the year.

Thanks also to Caracal, Griffen and Stevo for all their assistance and support though-out the year.

It was certainly rewarding to see parents response when getting involved and participate in the various activities, certainly the positive comments passed is extremely encouraging for scouting and the future of the troop.

INTERNET(www.oocities.org/yosemite/trails/1671)

Caracal has done great job in maintaining the troop web page, certainly lots of hours work has gone into it. Thanks Caracal for the great effort again this year. We are looking for a parent who would be willing to assist Caracal (as he now has a real job) with this. Please contact me if you are able too. I would encourage you to surf in and view Bushhill on the Web.

TROOP STRENGTH

The current strength of the troop is 26 Scouts. We have maintained all our senior scouts with the exception of Roland Booker. We will have good spread of boys in high school next year, which indicates that the troop is growing in scouting experience and skill, cooking and first aid the exception, we need to focus more on this next year. We said a sad farewell to the Davidson’s, as they returned to England after being held-up twice in their Spar shop.

NEW PATROL LEADERS / SECONDS

With Roland leaving during the year Justin Hawley has become the Patrol second of Cheetahs Patrol. We will be losing Bradley Glossop at the end of this year as he turns 18 and embarks on a world journey to parts unknown, Craig Lloyd is current acting Patrol Leader whilst Bradley prepares for Matric exams, with Dale Swikkard acting Patrol second.

TROOP PROGRESS

Troop advancement has once again being slow this year. There are various activities, tasks and badges that the boys need to complete at home. We are not seeing these being done.

A scouts skill evening will be run early in the new year to help parents to understand the various ways they can assist in the progress of their boys.

We have seen the boys however applying their scouting skills in the various events to great effect. Where district courses have been run, the troop has been well represented and the boys have passed.

The out in Scouting

Bushhill certainly has enjoyed the out in scouting during this year with great participation for the patrols and troop in both troop and district activities.

These activities exclude the formal training courses that the Scouters went on.

SCOUTERS
1998 has been a real rewarding year for both the Troop as well as myself. The benefit of having additional uniform help in Caracal, Griffin, and Kudu is also being felt by the troop as new programs and ideas were introduced on Tuesday’s and weekend events. Thanks also to Stevo for helping, we believe he has lost his uniform somewhere!!!. Stevo has requested help in tracing it yet? We sent Kudu back to England in July with fond memories and experiences of South Africa and Bushhill. It was certainly rewarding to see parents response when getting involved and participate in the various activities, certainly the positive comments passed is extremely encouraging for scouting and the future of the troop.

WATERSPORTS
After 2 years of scraping and sanding, the Mirror sailing dinghy was eventually completed and tested during the power charge on the Vaal Dam in 2 metre high swells. It passed the test, the outboard didn’t and we had to be towed back (maybe we should stick to sailing). The dinghy has also been used during the Sailing charge and the Sailing day. The troop has also acquired a number of canoes, which will be refurbished next year, any dads willing to assist, please contact us.

TROOP STRENGTH
The current strength is 26 Scouts compared with 18 at this time last year. 6 Scouts left during the year. 14 new scouts where invested of which 8 came from the pack.

NEW PATROL LEADERS / SECONDS
With the size of the troop growing, and a number of senior scouts having left, the patrols were re-arranged and a 4th patrol was formed .The following boys where promoted:

Vaughn Wood – Patrol Leader  / Matthew Fah  - Patrol Second
Trevor Bruce – Patrol Leader / Roland Booker  - Patrol Second
Jacques Otto – Patrol Second  / Craig Lloyd – Patrol Second

TROOP PROGRESS
1998 has been a building year in terms of applying and learning the basic’s of scouting, hence, the progress in terms of badges and advancement has been slow this year, however a number of scouts are very close to achieving badges and reaching the next advancement level. During the year the following advancement badges where achieved:

Pathfinder:  David le Cordeur and Roland Booker.
Adventurer:  Vaughan Wood First Class: Edward Ford
