Walk: Coledale Horseshoe
Group: 5 people
Weather: Cold, windy, snow and ice underfoot
Distance: 18Km
Comments: We were due to have Phil join us on this hike but he had an unfortunate fall whilst walking the previous day. We met him in Keswick and chatted whilst some people went and grabbed breakfast - noteably Bex who came back with several sausage rolls from the bakers. We were running abit late by the time we got above braithwaite and had to leave my car in one of the higher laybys and walk to the start of the route.
We came up and joined the main path by a route which I had not previously done. at the time i thought that not carrying an ice axe unlike the other members of the group would not be too much of an issue. However when we reached the summit of grisedale pike it was almost impossible to stand due to the ice underfoot and the strength of the wind.
After a brief lunch stop we carried on round following the wall along the familiar route. I seemed to make better progress than some with their ice axes though I wouldn't have refused to use mine if i had carried it. The day got much nicer as it drew on and we had a nice sunset as we came off Sand Hill. I would have like to get some pictures but my camera had still not been repaired.
When we returned to Braithwaite we had a drink in the Royal Oak. My only problem was that I had to run back up to the car and collect it whilst the others waited for me back in the village.
