This was the traditional May Bank Holiday Weekend with the hiking club and ex members of the club. Unfortunately I had only arrived back from New York at 7.30 on the Saturday morning and was on my way up to Wasdale by 8.30 that same morning.
Walk: kirk Fell and Great Gable
Group: Solo
Weather: Clear and Warm
Distance:
Comments: Having arrived at about 11am I had a look around the camp site to see if i could identify any of the other tents that i would have expected to see. Having found them I decided that I should go and do a walk on my own - part of me thought about sleep but I wasn't going to waste the day. I decided to go up Kirk Fell and see how things progressed. Despite the steep ascent I made very good progress up the front of Kirk Fell and decided that it was too early in the day to give up. I took a break on the route over to Great Gable and found a nice place in the shade. I had to force myself to get going again as I could feel myself drifting off. Partly because of how tired I was I decided just to do Great Gable and to not spend too much time. As it was I came down to the tarn and then took the slow descent into Wasdale. As I approached the camp site I ran into Phil, who I had half an idea would be turning up. I was able to get my tent set up before anyone else turned up, I had a quick meal before going down to the Wasdale Head Inn for the evening.
Walk: Scafell Pike, and Great End
Group: 8 people
Weather: Warm and sunny
Distance: 15km
Comments: After some dawdling at the camp site we decided to do Scafell Pike and see how things went. The route up from the camp site was fine although it did feel a bit like playing leap frog at times. The sun was particularly hot and we were pleased to take our time and enjoy several breaks. We sat for a while on the col between Sacfell and Scafell Pike and watched as another of our groups came down Broad Stand. After lunch we ascended to Scafell Pike and were pleasantly surprised by the absence of people with mobile phones at the summit. We walked along the ridge towards Great End without making a particular effort to bag both Ill Crag and Broad Crag. Fromt he summit of Great End we descended down towards Sprinkling Tarn and then back to the path I had taken the previous day.
