Famous Scunthonians

I believe Scunthonain is the official term for someone who comes from Scunthorpe. It is my intention on this page to provide a list of famous and not so famous people who have links to the town. My lknowledge of such people is fairly limited so if people want to email me with any additions from any walk of life then I will hopefully get round to putting them on. ( quicker than previously ).

Kevin Keegan:

This footballer is unquestionably one of the great stars oif British football, and also holds the unenviable job of National Coach. He began his playing career at the Old Showground, the home of Scunthorpe United. After playing for such a club he then chose to go and play for some team called Liverpool. Can`t think why.

Ian Botham

Once again another great sportsman who began his playing career in Scunthorpe. It was however not for the cricket which he is obviously well known. He actually played football for Scunthorpe United

Graham Taylor

I don`t know whether he should be regarded as famous or imfamous. He was the football manager under whom England narrowly missed out on qualification for the World Cup Finals. His family comes from Scunthorpe and his dad Tom Taylor is the sports editor for one of the local papers. He may also have something to do with Subbuteo, but I don`t know if its the same Tom Taylor.

Jimmy Mcgovern

Although he was born ( unfortunately for him ) a scouser he spent many happy years in Scunthorpe. He has since written several programmes for television which have been very successful including, Brookside and Cracker. Perhaps its the towns influence. It has certainly been mentioned in Cracker on more than one occasion, when they are sitting in the Hare and Hounds, drinking

Emily Plowright

I don`t really know why she is famous, because whoever sent me the info didn`t say. However whatever she did they named the local theatre after her so she was maybe connected with the Arts.

Tony Jacklin

There are no doubts about it he is a golfing legend. This one time US Masters champion and a load more besides heralds from Scunthorpe. Though for some reason we don`t see much of him around there, even now Forest piunes has opened.

Donald Pleasance

He is slighly before my time, though I imagine everyone has heard of him. It would be hard to say what his greatest film was but forgiving the pun The Great Escape must rate up there.
