First Time Out For Larry
I can recall a multitude of humorous episodes that occurred on many enjoyable hunting trips over the last 25 years. Such as the time that four of us that were stationed together at Robins AFB, Georgia, were hunting whitetail several miles from Hawkensville. It was a great piece of hunting land that had hills, swamps, meadows and briar patches, lots of pines and lots of sign. We worked that area pretty hard on the first day and by the time we got back to camp, we were very tired, very wet, all scratched up and cramping up. We sat around the camp fire for a couple hours talking about the various critters that one might run into, such as cotton mouths, gators and spiders. It was the first time out for Larry and we hadn't previously known that he was very nervous about the thought of snakes being in the same county that he was in. I had read of a similar situation, somewhere, and followed the same course of action that I had read about. All for the sake of entertainment, at Larry's expense, of course.
After we all bedded down for the night, Jim and I got back up and carefully tied down a cardboard box over the upper half of Larrys body. We were being as careful as possible to be quiet and not wake him up. Luckily, he was sleeping pretty sound after a hard day of climbing, crawling and falling. Over the tied down box we placed a blanket to muffle any outside noise, and inside the box, we placed an alarm clock. (The kind with the over-sized bells that wake the dead when it goes off.) Larry was sleeping so good, too. We woke Jerry up so he could enjoy the show and just sat by the embers of the dying fire and waited. The alarm clock went off and we all started yelling "SNAKE...SNAKE". You could see the bottom of the sleeping bag going flat as he was coming out of it, then there was a very short pause and all of a sudden, the cardboard box exploded! The thrashing, screaming and dancing around only lasted about a minute or so... the yelling lasted a little longer... but it 's been good for 15 years of laughing so far. Even Larry got to where he could laugh about it after a year or so. And I've still never seen anybody get out of a mummy bag any faster than what Larry did that night! And we never did figure out where that good wool army blanket disappeared to!
