Report=Took my daughter out on the 1/2 day boat Matt Walsh. This boat is an old tub and slower than a cabazon but it is my favorite out of all the LA based boats because the crew works very hard to catch fish and they do a good job of controling the seal problem, ahem...if you know what I mean. It also gets bit, fish seem to like those old woody's. Anyway, getting to the fishing, it wasn't wide open today and rained like hell for about 20 min. during the better part of the bite. I got four on the iron right away and then they seemed to not want the irons any more but were still crashing on the chum (anchovies) Good thing I brought the "twitch", a #6 test little trout rod. After that, I was practically the only person hooking up anymore. I must have lost about a dozen hooks, but I did manage to bring two more nice cudas to the boat on the "tinker toy" rod, nicknamed by the deckhand. Other people started flyling chovies but they had too heavy line and were not getting bit. (I believe the cudas were getting full and being very picky) but I was getting nailed on almost every cast. Although they are large, scooters don't really fight that hard, even on #6 test I could get them up in under 5 min., provided they are lip-hooked. I never go cuda fishing without bringing the twitch and it has payed-off many of times when the bite gets finicky. As for the rest of the people it wasn't that great. The deckhands were saying that it was more of an afternoon bite. Experienced anglers were getting a few but alot got skunked. My daughter got one on her own with bait and I handed off a couple to her. She also got a couple of queenfish off the bottom. I did see about a 6 pound sand bass taken and a legal halibut. Also, I missed the jackpot by ounces, very close!! On the way back, I gave a couple of my fish to someone who did not catch any. Thanks Matt Walsh, for another good trip!
